  • Crankcase Vent Filter

    i removed my air box and installed 4 small individual air filters on my carbs and a small crank case vent filter and now when the bike gets hot i get alot of vapours coming out of the crank filter... does this mean i have piston blowby and i am pressurizing my crank case or is there normally pressure there?? i removed the oil filling plug as well and i can feel air pushing out as well but it dont smell like exhaust fumes it just smells like used oil

    It is normal for some pressure (blow by) but excessive amount would indicate worn rings. IIRC, there is a fella here that devised a way to connect the breather vent to the pods if you want to go that route. It won't hurt anything just running a filter on there, just make sure your breather filter does not become plugged or you may end up blowing the rubber cam plugs out the right side of the head.

      sorry for the late response on this but i routed the crankcase hose into my pod air filter and now there is oil dripping from the filter so i think she is blowing to much oil up to my filter. any ideas?

        Yea, I'll bet with hose hooked into pod.....just like a vacuum sucking oil.
        Most I've seen that insist on using pods just attach a small breather/vent/filter vertically on crankcase vent.

          i already had a nice little pod filter on the crankcase line and oil mist was running out of the filter so that was when i put it into the air intake pod and then i guess like you said it was suckng the oil out

            How many mi. have you got on the bike, both total and what you have put on ?
            How long did it sit not running ? Could mean the rings just need to re-seat.
            I'm not going to start an oil thread but on one of my bikes I tried Rotella T 15w40 and it blew oil out the breather hose, switched to techron 15W40 and it stopped.
            I really like yamalube 20W40 but now they quit making it, it's now 20W50.

              Even very hot you should not get much through your vent filter...maybe a small wisp every now and then. If you are getting that much blow by then it would be wise to do a leak down test on each cylinder. A compression test is not the most reliable to check for blow by but that will give an indication. A leak down test can pinpoint what is happening in each cylinder.

                You should use the 20W50 rather than the 15W40. The first number is the important one and represents the actual weight/thickness of the oil (15W or 20W), the second number is the load rating of the oil compared to an equivalent straight-weight oil. The thinner oil will blowby/leak easier...
