  • Can Someone Suggest Jet Size ?

    Hi Everyone !

    I have a 1980 SX1100 G model I think, the first part of it says 3H5-01----

    I want to remove the airbox and use the PODS sold at MikeXS.. I know I need to rejet all the carbs, my questions are the basic ones,, what size jets and do the needle valves come with them as a set ?

    Any help would be Awesome !!!

    No sense doing any jetting before installing the pods and testing, run it see how it does, run good ? Now chop test running slow check the plugs, faster check the plugs, give it hell check the plugs again, lite tan is OK, white is OK, white with silver flecks means your burning the aluminum off the tops of the pistons, not good, to lean, real dark porcelain or black to rich. But you knew this.

      +1 Don't change ANYTHING until you've ridden it with the mod. In most cases It'll run fine on stock jets.

      It pretty much depends on your riding style.

        Depends on several other factors. What exhaust do you have? Factory, 4-2, 4-1, good baffling or modified?

        There is a jetting guide on the site. It will help you determine a probable starting point. However, it is just that, a starting point. So, you could just as easy start with what you have and see how it goes.

          Baseline, baseline, baseline

          I agree with what most have responded with....try it first. Many times with carbs, bigger is not better because they are nothing more than a balancing act.

          I will throw another small caveat into this....establish a good baseline to work from (and write down all your settings). Make sure EVERYTHING else is in tune. Check valves, timing, carb sync, spark, etc. before changing out your filter box to pods. Generally, the carbs should be the last thing you touch.

          Then, make only one change at a time and try the results. You can always go back to your baseline if you need to.

            If you look down in the forums under the "Modifications" section, and choose "Carbs and Fuel System", you will see in the list "Jetting Recommendations". Now, this is not the end all be all guide to exactly what jets your setup will need, but it can help guide you to the right ball park. Chances are, if you are just swapping to PODS and everything else works great as is, you may not need to re-jet. This guide will help you figure out where to go if you do.

              And please, PLEASE, do not throw your air box away.
              If you do not want it, and are sure that you will not want it in the future, someone on the site will be more than glad to pay the postage to have you ship it to them.
              There are people who have taken theirs apart, lost pieces, and would like to get a stock one back on their bike.

                  this is great. I am looking to run individual cone filters on my set up too and was also wondering about how these carbs tend to handle mods.

                  I haven't done any looking at all yet, (just bought the bike a couple days ago) but need to figure out what size carbs are on this bad boy. I've modded other bikes in the past and as soon as put the new filters on the thing ran leaner than all hell. Sounds like these bikes may be a bit more forgiving. Please let us know what kind of results you see from your filters!

                  I will be sure not to kill my air box too so it can go to live on in someone else's bike haha

                    The SG has a Kerker 4-1, and pod filters. I honestly have always stuck to the factory airbox and 4-2 exhaust as I did not want to spend forever changing jets.

                    I have it jetted pretty much stock. I just finished tuning it up and was pleasantly surprised to find it tuned perfectly. So it seems to be a bike to bike issue.

                      I installed a set of those cheap universal (Emgo) pod filters on my KZ400 two years ago and the rubber has deteriorated already even with minimal use and the bike was stored inside - very disappointing. I decided to replace them with K&N's. Sometimes you get what you play for.
