  • XS Emblem fabrication

I have been working on fabricating replacement emblems. I have a batch at the body shop right now to be painted gold urethane with a good clearcoat on top of that. You should then be able to paint them over with black acrylic and wipe the surfaces of the letters to get a 'gold on black' look. Rather than using mounting posts, these have been fabricated for attachment with trim tape.

Here's a progress photo from earlier this spring while I was still working out the process:

I'll post an update note once I have the emblems back from the body shop....

    Wow, these look great

So, I called the yamaha importer, and they say the factory colors for 1978 XS 1100 european model were:
    Macho maroon (offcourse)
Arctic silver (or sth like that, not sure)

Gonna paint it back to macho maroon
It looks great black too, but what the hell... I can repaint any time.

They look good enough to EAT! Sorry, I haven't had breakfast yet. Looks like easter candy. ;-)

No news yet from the body shop - the co-owner working on them was on holidays this week, and as a non-PTR job, they're not about to take somebody from a real job to have a go at them. More next week I hope....

Not yet, Gregg. I don't have any unfinished sets on hand, but I've got 10 pairs at the shop for the gold/clear treatment. At this point, I'm out of the polyurethane casting resin, but will consider ordering some more for another production run if it looks like the painted ones are going to run out.

                    Ken,
                    Beautiful work!
Any chance of emblems for the good looking, err, special models?

I think so, James, but I don't want to get anybody's expectations too high until I can get some feedback on the Standard units. The Special emblem is a longer, narrower (i.e. bit more fragile) unit, so could be a bit tougher to get the proper curved back profile. I plan to protoype some Midnight Special emblems first from Black Ice, which are also longer and narrower.

                        Emblems

I am really impressed with your work, any chance you might be shipping these to the UK in the near future? Does anybody out there have any tank emblems (screw on) for a 1979 XS11E

                        regards form over the pond

Hi Peter (from over the pond),
I believe the gold ones are discontinued from yamaha. They use a chrome one on the golf carts. It will fit the xs11 - i am told. I have not recieved mine yet. should be able to order from any yamaha dealer. These are the same emblems that people are selling as rare/NOS XS11 parts, when they are just golf cart emblems.

To Bill Woods ref. golf cart emblems

I sure am glad you posted that message as I need a gas tank emblem for my '78 XS11E and since I am a newby, someone would've saddled me up and rode me like a horse.

                            Thanks again,
