  • @$$ Backwards Clutch!

I have a new one for you. I finally got my F running great, sync'd and everything. I have not ridden the bike yet as I bought it this winter and after getting it to run initially I started tear down. I now have everything back together and discovered yesterday that if I put the bike in gear on the center stand I can freely move the rear wheel and can tell the clutch plates are free. However when I pull the clutch lever the clutch locks up solid. The clutch is completely backwards!! How the hell could this happen?

Anyone hear of this before? I'm going to wait to hear if anyone has experience with this happening before I tear the cover off. The previous owner did say he replaced the clutch. And prior to tear down I did remember the clutch being locked up, as in not working. I just thought it was from sitting with no oil.

Time to remove the clutch cover an take a look. There was a recent thread about problems with the triangular piece that functions to engage/disengage the clutch.

Are you certain you got the clutch engaged with the primary drive gear correctly? Did the nut tighten down? My thinking is that if the back gear of the clutch basket is pushing against the prim gear instead of being meshes with it, then it might slip across it until you pull the cable and the springs put pressure on it, then it may get pressed against it enough to stop it. JAT.

I definitely think your going to need to pull the clutch cover and maybe the clutch itself off to solve this.

Im going to try playing with the adjustment before I remove the cover. Been a few months since I installed it so I don't really remember what I all did.

I'm going with this idea as well. I'm thinking the release bearing (triangular piece) is clocked wrong. Easy fix if we're right.

The clutch cover is an easy removal procedure. Put the bike on the side stand and you don't even need to drain the oil.

            Pull that cover.

I have had the clutch covers off of these bikes a couple times and that doesn't bother me at all. What does is that I just changed oil, and plus I don't want to uneededly chip the freshish paint on the cover.

Well I am certainly glad I readjusted the clutch before tearing into it. I apparently had adjusted the bolt much to far in when I installed the cover months ago. I ba ked it out, ran it back in to where I liked the engagement and that was it. Works like a champ. So basically I had the adjustmeny bolt so far in that the clutch pack was always released. Still don't understand why it would engage when the clutch lever is pulled. Apparently the pressure plate was coming out far enough to contact something.
