  • 1980 xs1100 cafe conversion advice needed

Hello, I am looking for some knowledgeable advice on how to choose and find handle bars for my bike. I am trying to achieve a classic cafe style without the swoop fairing. I've spoken to a few guys at various bike shops in my area but they seem to know little to nothing about what works and what doesn't for these bikes. It seems single piece bars are what I am seeing in pictures of similar projects but I am being told that clip on bars are the way to go. I don't see how they are going to give any clearance from the tank and need guidance from folks that have done these before. Thanks for any input on this as well as advice on stripping down the wiring harness.

Well, as far as handlebar advice, someone else will have to chime in. But for the wiring, don't bother with trying to 'strip' the harness as it's more trouble than it's worth. Weight saving is near zero... Just unplug the stuff you don't want.

Looks like my previous post got deleted out of here. Searching Ebay for Clubman Bars will give you a ton of results. After that its up to personal preference for comfort.

do you have the standard tank or the special tank? Just about any clubman bars will work with the special tank, but at full lock with the standard tank the regular clubman bars will hit the tank, potentially denting the tank or scratching the paint. you'll have to find some clubman bars with a wider base. or if you want clip ons (in my opinion not worth it, and don't work well) just about any will work. you may want to look into a new, smaller brake fluid reservoir as it can hit the headlight with the old one. if you have the square headlight and don't want the fairing, i would get a round one.
1979 xs special, just finished the top end rebuild and then i still have lots of work.
        progress thus far...
