  • Burned clutch plates?

I started my tear down tonight in anticipation of all my new parts showing up this week. I pulled the clutch springs and figured since it was open I would check all the plates.

All of the friction plates were between 3 and 2.95 mil so no issues there. However, the steel plates were all a kind of mottled brown and two of them had a couple purple spots. The outside tabs on the friction plates looked like they had oil burned on them.

Do they need to be replaced?

I'd like to see burned discs like this changed out. On the other hand have you checked it for flatness on the glass/flat for warp ? That blue/purple spot tells me it was dragging, warped. If it is flat sand it in swirling motions and reuse.

You can try cleaning the friction discs in kerosese and scrubbing them some with a brush.

Sand and reuse the steels if they are not warped.
