I have read a few threads regarding the motion pro tool.
some love em, some do not.
I am thinking that people who love them have an older XS.
and the people who do not, have an 81 XS

I am thinking this tool does not work on the 81 XS.

Tools are unique to the individual. Some hate certain ones, while others revere them.
I myself have never tried the valve shim tool, so I can't say either way, but I've had okay success with the cam removal method and others here have as well. We've gotten used to doing it that way and probably will never use the tool.

I have read that some of these had to slightly modified to fit.

yes you would have to grind away quite a bit of the tool to clear the cam.

additionally, I am wondering what the harm is in turning the engine counter-clockwise???

for the intakes, you can turn the engine clockwise with the tool in place.
but for the exhausts, you would have to turn the engine CCW to get at the shim.

Same motor in all the xs1100 series, including the XJ(Maxim)......and same head. Only internal differences is the valve sizes/cam profiles.

Not true.... While the bottom end/trans is the same for all XS/XJ motors, there's three distinct cylinder heads and two types of cylinders.

cam profiles would have a huge difference in that tool working.

what harm can be done by turning the engine CCW ?

I like em and use them on all of my bikes. I noticed no difference when using it on my 81 LH. I have two here and one is slighty different than the other, but both work fine. Neither one has been ground at all. We covered this all including a bunch of photos in a previous thread but I can not think of it right now.
Maybe a poll is in order to see if there is any validity to the theory about earlier vs later engines on these. It would have to be a separate poll from who likes/dislikes them though, as that would drive the thread into a non meaning argument as so many have differing opinions on them.

Cam profile is not a factor in using the motion pro tool. The root diameter of the cams are the same for all models.

No harm in turning the motor CCW, if your using the tool properly you have to turn it CCW to remove the shim after you install the tool. You just have to go slow and realize thee starter clutch will drag a little provide some resistance.

The best tutorial I found came from the XJ owner site. Someone posted a link to their site, I highly recommend it to anyone using the tool.

Also, the tool dosent require a lot of modification...10 mins with a chainsaw file and it works better then without it...

I am learning how to service engines and am inexperienced with engine work but was able to replace valve shims on a 1981 very easily with the Motion Pro tool. I also changed out the shims on my 1979. The tool works great and I cannot figure out why experienced people cannot use this tool.

Because the MotionPro tool is made by sand casting, and not all the castings are the same (not-so-good quality control). Some fit great as-is, some need mods to fit right....

I guess I was lucky and purchased a good one. I find it strange that quality control at Motion pro is so poor. Has anyone contacted them to complain?
