  • Cam Tensioner Question

I have a 1981 XS1100 Midnight Special. I had all four of my carburetors rebuilt end of last riding season. As such I did not notice an oil leak that I have traced to what looks like the external adjuster for the Cam Tensioner.

I am not certain if it is missing a plug for the middle or if it is broken.

The bike runs but does have the 1st and 2nd gear shift problem.

Yep its supposed to have a plastic plug in the middle. Mine popped out and started leaking too. Do yourself a favor and consider this a good time to upgrade to an ACCT.

From the looks of that CCT, it hasn't been adjusted in quite some time if ever?
There is NO PRESSURE behind that plug point, so that's why folks have been able to use all sorts of things to plug it up with RTV or other sealants, a creative thinker used a BOTTLE CAP while on a trip!

Just in case you hadn't seen it, an ACCT is an automatic cam chain tensioner, searches for ACCT will reveal info about them.

There are some WARNINGS regarding working on the CCT, so read up on them as well so you don't get the chain slack down around the crank, skip a tooth and bend valves.

When I bought the bike it had a bad carb float and the crank was filled with gasoline. Could the cam chain not being adjusted possibly add to the kick from the 1st and 2nd gear not engaging. I have noticed even in idle if the bike is not warmed up like really warmed up if i pop the throttle up quick just to test the response time, i have noticed it will want to choke out and die.

Cam chain leak you have and its adjustment is unlikely related to the condition you are describing. Depending on the history of the bike, how dirty the carbs were and the amount of skill the person who "cleaned" them, them may need...
            1. More cleaning
            2. Synchronizing
            3. Fine tuning

Also you have to consider the other stuff like, did you clean the fuel system? Does it have freah gas? Did you put inline filters on it after the cleaning?

We've seen it all too many times... new member comes in and says they just paied big bucks to have a shop "clean" their carbs and cant figure out why its still not running right but the only thing they really did was clean their wallet.

Take a look in the maintenance section at the link for cleaning and tuning your carbs...

As to the cam chain effecting the performance of the bike in the way our describing, not likely at all. The performance issue you describe just sounds like you need to let it warm up a little longer before you take off. If you take off to soon, or drop the choke out to soon, it will stumble in low rpm till it warms up. Does it take off just fine above about 3k rpm?
