  • Pits in black chrome fish eye in the paint

    XSives,
Hope you have the answer, 81LH pits in the black chrome. I did the headlight brackets and under headlight emblem holder, turned out very nice ! The gauge cups and scuffed headlight rim not so good so I wrinkle painted them, kinda like the look.
Had no problem with the tank beautiful.
Now I'm on the rear shocks and no matter what I try, Dawn soap, followed up with simple green, no go, Final Prep, carb cleaner, brake cleaner, acetone, no go. Strip the paint off again and try the whole bit again, less but still fish eye. Strip again and still less fish eye but still some in the most visible areas.
Must be wax or oil in the pits and the chemicals I'm using are just not cleaning it out, black chrome I've heard can be a problem. I'm thinking total strip to bare metal, prime and paint again ?
Any special preps I've missed ?
    Thanks All ! Don };~)

Try baking the parts (not the main shock body) for a couple of hours at about 250 degrees to boil whatever is in there out, then reclean. You might want to do this a couple of times to be sure....

Not sure how well this will work for paint, but works good for powdercoating.

Clean them with preps-all or any good prep cleaner, scuff with med- scotch bright, then prim with etching primer, should be good to top coat with your paint with some fish eye additive. Good luck with you bike

That black chrome can be almost as miserable as real shiny chrome to deal with. I would take it down to bare metal if it were mine. If you have access to an air supply you can make a cheap blaster out of basically nothing if you do not have one. There is a thread on here about a cheap soda blaster which will also work with Boy scout sand if that is all you have.
Bare metal and primer then it is only the skills that cause problems, not base material. My black chrome was too far gone to try even painting over so I removed it all on my project.

I'll agree with this, with one caveat; it's not a good idea to blast springs. The only safe method for removing chrome from springs is chemical stripping. Blasting can act like 'stress relieving' and take the temper out of the springs. Same thing goes for high heat (over 300 degrees); either method can leave you with a spring that will collapse at first use. Blasting with soda or walnut shells should be OK, but more aggressive media is a bad thing...

Well I sanded them down with 400 to metal and then washed them in final prep, as per directions, turns out good good !

The oven did not help ?

But thanks for trying to help me !!!!!

              Thanks ! Don };~)
