  • Who's still running on their original brake lines?

So after 33yrs, I'm looking at my brake lines and seeing them looking pretty good with no cracks, and flowing pretty easily, as opposed to my 43yr old VW bug brake lines which have swollen up inside and stopped fluid from returning to the master cylinder. Awesome way to have a line locker, but not what you want.

So who's comfortable riding on their antique original brake lines?
Bone stock 1980 Special except for the exhaust and crashbars. Oh yeah, and the scabbard for the Winchester Defender.

My 86 Yamaha Venture and son law's 80 XS still have the original lines. I am sure they both would have better brakes with new lines.

Mine were original, but decided to go to Stainless lines. It stopped pretty good still on the original lines. After the stainless lines, I had to totally re-learn the braking on my bike. It took a while when coming to stop signs to where I didn't try to see what the windshield tasted like. There's that much difference, and I would have argued with anyone that the original lines worked just fine.

Same for me. Changed out old rubber lines to stainless last year. I can really feel the difference. Original lines lines 30 years old...recommended to change @ 4 years...I feel like I got my money's worth out of them.

I second that!. Mine are original, and if I had some extra money I'd get new ones too.

Now, some of you may say that stopping is the most important thing you can do for your bike, and I agree, but my lines currently work okay.

Mine are original but I do maintenance on the system when I have it running I pull calipers and clean every 3 years clean the lines and the master cylinder. It was sitting appart for over 10 years. I flush it out with fluid and then put all new in. It is a lot of work but you got to do something in the winter. I may next time replace the lines as the old ones are building more corrosion in them and I don't want to be surprized one day.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

                            original lines

I still have original lines on all the bikes and intend to change them this season. Everything except the Gk zuk brakes ok, strange that the gk braking is poor, but the same year gl is great, must be something besides the lines on the gk.

Go to Ebay... Universal stainless lines are @ a buck an inch or less, shipped. The banjo fittings on the ends are @ $7 each, shipped. Figure out what you need and buy it a piece at a time. Each payday, buy a piece or two. Within two or three months, you'll have your setup.... painlessly.
