  • Service Interval Poll - Middle & Final Drive Oil Change

So I just changed my middle and final drive oils and felt like I just waisted good oil out of the final drive. The service manual says to change it at 5000 mile intervals but I changed it at about 8000 miles. The final drive oil looked as good as when it went in and the magnet on the plug didnt have much on it. The middle drive oil was darker and the plug had maybe twice the amount of sludge on it... Im using a Valvoline synthetic blend and I believe the service intervals can be doubled or more if you are using a synthetic blend or full synthetic. I'd like to hear what intervals people are changing their middle and final drive oils at and what oil they use. This isnt intended to be a debate on what is the best oil to use, just what you use and what interval you change it at.

    Thanks!

Valvoline "Durablend" Synthetic Blend, SAE 85W-140, meets API GL-5 and MT-1 services... about to go to 10,000 mile interval.

75-140w RoyalPurple Syn. in both middle and final drive. Since its not my main ride any more, and only gets a few thousand miles of exercise a year, change intervals come every two or three yrs........if I happen to think of it. Only saving grace for the long intervals is the low to no humidity conditions here. Drains out still purple with the middle drive lookin' like it was just freshly put in.

      Hi WMarshy,
I am using the same semi synthetic blend with similar results. I too plan to exstend the change interval. With dino oil I found it would change colour as though it was picking up moisture even though no filings on the drain plug.

It has been two years since I drained the Royal Purple 75-140 out of Banshee. Now, when I got the SG, I drained the middle and final drive oils. This bike sat unused for two years. The fluids came out looking brand new. I have no idea how many miles were on them, but for time purposes, it had not effected the fluids.

I use a full synthetic and change once a year after I get a little time on it in the spring.

I'm using the synthetic as well. It could probably go for years but I do a spring change along with the other checks like oil, brake fluid and fresh air in the tires.

I save up my clean used Royal Purple gear lubes and pass them onto my kids' hooptie cars. His vehicles usually die a horrible death that is NOT related to lubrication issues anyways.

Heck, my old man maintained large fishing boats (V8 powered) in the mid/late 80s. Owners would drain/fill before any major trips. Most of the oil had about 8 hours of time on it. My old 60's Dodge POS loved that fancy oil back then. Free!!

Dont forget to tell us what oul you are using, it does no good to us if we dont know what oil yoi are using. If using convential gear lube then the 5000 mile interval is probably appropriate...

                    Oh goody, an oil thread!
Just to throw a bone of contention, I will pass on some info that I heard from a tech rep for Kendall Oil. I asked him about the change interval on hypoid oil, in relation to warranty coverage on the rear end and tranny of a new truck, and he said that if the oil doesn't change color, either through heat oxidization or water contamination, that after a 5 or 10 thousand mile break in period, a drain of old, and a refill of new was all that would be required to go a 100 thousand miles. He said that the additive package was good as long as the oil didn't get contaminated. So if you have a source for Kendall, take it for what it's worth.
Personally, the white plastic dip stick gives a good view as to the clarity of the oil, and if it starts to look dark or creamy, it might be time to investigate the mechanical condition of the gear box.
