  • Tire valves

Beginning to work on the 1978 Standard I picked up a few weeks ago.

Went to pump up the rear tire and found the valve situation below. Two valves and neither of them is open. Any thoughts?

This picture shows the two valves - one at 12 and one at 6.

This shows the top valve in more detail. Not threaded all the way and the un-threaded part is solid on the end. Tried removing it with vice grips and it appears to me that it is part of the valve.

Very confused. Thanks for your help.

Well, one of those is a rim lock. Likely a tube in there being a '78. If there's two rim locks, that would be a good trick getin' air in the tire...

      Learned something new again today.
      Thanks Moto.

If you wanted to convert it to a tubeless, would you just 'plug'/'seal' that tube lock so it wouldn't leak air?

The 78 and early 79 Standards have 2 rim locks on the rear wheel. You can block those off and run tubeless if you want and put in a tubeless type valve stem. IIRC, Crazy Steve has written a tech tip to show how.

            Steve,

I have a 1980G parts bike. Can I just swap out the rear wheel? The tire is in good shape and is a 140/80.

            Thanks

The XS rear wheels will all interchange 'like for like' (same rim size) will no issues. If swapping from a 17" to a 16" (or vice versa), you need to change brake caliper brackets and spacers also.

So a '80G wheel will swap onto a '78E, but do check the tire to make sure it's load rated for at least 670 lbs; a lower aspect ratio usually means less load capability. You may have clearance issues with the oversize too; don't assume because it fit one bike it will fit another as there's enough variation in the swingarms that the tire may hit.

The wheel is a direct swap! I would say to keep the old wheel for a spare, and put a tubeless tire on it once you have plugged the holes from the rim locks. I know the tire changes do NOT know what to do, or how to change a tire with the locks! Yamaha had them on the first year because they thought the tires would be spinning on the rims with the HP the bikes made. All the dirt and racing bikes of the day had some type of rim lock, be it this type or just metal screws into the bead of the tire.

                  Thanks, guys.

Motoman - you asked the right question ' "How the hell would they have filled the tire if they are both rim locks?". When I got down on my stomach with a flashlight I found the two rim locks AND a regular valve. Just missed it the first time.

Steve and Diver - thanks for the information on swapping tires.

By the way, the front tire does not have a rim lock.

The rim locks were only used on the early rear wheel, and are a PITA to deal with.
