  • changing rear tire

My rear tire is fubar, my service manual has gone missing, and I have never messed with the tires before...can someone give me the rundown on how to take it off and put it back on? My local shop will switch out the tire but it has to be taken off the bike first.

Basic procedure? Tools required? Potential problems to try to avoid? I really don't want to mess this up...thanks in advance!

      Here's a good pictorial from T.C.-

Although the link is for a Special it will get ya enough info to get your tire off and to the shop and also check their work.

Make sure of the "born on date" of the tire you purchase and that it is installed with the "dot" and "arrow" in the right position.

Take pics of the orientation of the spacers and dust seals so you can reinstall in the proper order.
Also you'll want to remove the final drive and clean the old grease off of the driveshaft, inspect the splines and repack with moly grease. Clean and regrease your wheel bearings also.

I believe the rear axle nut torque is 72 ft. lbs. and the pinch bolt is 14 ft. lbs. I'll have to check on the final drive and caliper mount bolt torque.
Speaking of caliper, check the disc brake pads and disc rotor for wear.

        Correction

I misquoted the torque values in the above post.

I see you have an '80G so torque values differ from the Specials.

rear axle nut: Standard - 108 ft. lbs. / Special - 76 ft. lbs.

rear axle pinch bolt: Standard - 4.5 ft. lbs. / Special - 14.5 ft. lbs.

final drive to rear swing arm for all XS/XJ1100's - 30 ft. lbs.

rear caliper support bolt for all XS/XJ1100's - 13 ft. lbs.

minumim disc rotor thickness front and rear for all XS/XJ1100's - 6.5mm

The rear axle nut torque is 108 ft-lbs for ALL XS/XJ 11's as per the factory manuals. That 76 number for the Special keeps coming up but is a wrong misprint in the Clymer manual...
