Hey guys, a local has this for sale cheaply enough that I am tempted to put in about twice as much as it's worth to get it almost roadworthy, then park it and look at for years, wondering what next step to take. I haven't looked at it yet...any votes on what she is? Chain drive, supposedly 1982, straight four, has Special styling:

Is that an 11 or is it one of the smaller models? Doesn't look like the xj guage cluster.Nathan

I do not know these bikes on sight like some do, but my guess is an XJ650 or 750. Only one front disk, the kickstart, oil fill location are give aways it is not an 11, among other differences. MMM....you might also notice it is missing carbs, might make it a little tough to start.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

XJ550.
XJ650 & 750 are shafties Plus, what Don has pointed out, the single front disc rotor gives it away.

Its an 82 XJ 550 Maxim same as Dylan's in my sig...just minus some parts.
It has a very small bike feel riding it due to seat position. I would pass unless you need a smaller bike. Plus parts are a bit harder to find as it wasnt as popular.

A bit rough, I would say. No front pegs and that rear brake pedal has been bent up to accomodate feet on the rear set a little better.
Still, the 550 is a nice bike once it is in good shape. Good comuter and a lot lighter to throw around a corner than the 1100s.Jerry Fields

The carbs, headlight, pegs and more are in a box waiting for the next sucker to step up with a wad of bills. The part of me that wants to save a bike from being parted out on Ebay is fighting with the part that says, "You have a complete bike in the garage that you can't fix and you want a basket case?!""Time is the greatest teacher; unfortunately, it kills all of its students."
