I would say valve seals. 30 years old means seals break down regardless of miles."The Hooligan" XJ1100, Virago Gauge Pods, Screaming Eagle Mufflers, K&N Filter, hand made rear fender, side covers, and solo seat, round bar conversion, small headlight, tail light, and cat eye turn signals, chip fuses, rewired the right way.

Barry, I also think valve seals. Next time put her on the centre stand and I bet you will not have the problem at start up. I have ridden thousands of miles behind a 78E that does that and it is still running great. Just something to live with a 30+ year old machine.

I left my 88 BMW K100LT on the side stand all winter one year the cylinders are all on the left. Side stand is fine for short periods but for even overnight always the center stand for that bike. They said this problem had been solved by 88. Now they build a upright four.
