i know i have seen a thread on here that talks about putting a 16 inch special rim on a standard, but i cant seem to find it anywhere. i was just wondering if any thing needed to be done to make it work. i thought i read that you would have to modify the drive shaft tube, but not sure if that wasnt just for the wider tire. any help will be greatly appreciated. and the reason that i am switching to the 16 inch is for a wider selection of tires, especially white walls. i havent been able to find one in the 17 inch, and i have been looking since i first got the bike almost two years ago. thanks in advance for the help.

im sure we can figure it out. when i switched to the 17on the 850 it was a direct swap. someone before used washers as an axle spacer on the 850 so i used the 750's axle spacer on the 850. I dont know if that applies to what your doing. lol. Hell i dont know much. lol.1979 XS1100 Special. Nicely modified.

Here's the difference.... the pic is fuzzy, but you still should be able to tell...
On the left is the Special caliper bracket and spacer, right is the standard. To swap to the 16" from the 17" you need the Special parts. The inner spacer for the Special is .300" thicker, the bracket is different, and you don't use the outer standard spacer.
The reason for the different parts is the Special wheel moves the brake rotor outboard .3" further with different machining.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

crazy thought but would it be possible to remove/ machine .3 from the 16in wheel to make the current brake setup work?1979 XS1100 Special. Nicely modified.

Swapping to the Special 16" wheel does not change the actual brake caliper or its mounting. Just the bracket Steve showed, and the corresponding spacers.
These are fairly common parts, and not typically broken or damaged so with as many bikes as there are out there broken apart there are plenty of these parts available so the machining would not make much sense...IMHO.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

not as much as you'd think; the 16" wheel runs a fatter tire so some of what you lose on the wheel radius you gain on the tire height.Fred Hill, S'toon

I do not know for sure, if you go to http://www.cmsnl.com/ you can look at parts fishe for pretty much any bike. I use it all the time. You can compare the part number for the XS850 components to the ones for the XS11 and see if they match. Not always going to give you the full story, but it certainly is a good start.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
