I am a proud new owner of 79 XS 11. It is black and yellow and Kenny Roberts tribute paintjob. Changed all the plugs. Then change the oil. I noticed the bike sounded differentHas anyone else experienced this?

Hey Janz,
First of all, welcome to the FUN! Secondly, have you got a manual, printed or electronic, owner's or service? If not, then you need to follow the links in Catatonic Bugs profile so you can download some.
A common mistake folks make is to pull the oil filter chamber, and think they have drained the oil, when in fact the oil drain plug is just behind the oil filter chamber on the side of the large rectangular tranny/engine pan.
Then the second mistake is filling the bike with oil, either just going ahead and putting in 3 quarts of oil...but having not properly drained it all, it can get overfilled! OR...they use the oil level indicator, but have the bike on the sidestand instead of the centerstand...which again causes an overfill condition.
You weren't very descriptive on how the sound changed?? Is it more tinny or rattling in it's nature, more or less noisy? If it was low on oil to begin with, it could have been more noisier that after fresh oil in it.
We can only suggest from what you tell us....more data please!

What weight oil did you put back into the bike? You might be hearing a little more vavle train noise..? Are your plugs torqued good? As TC said, a little more detail woupd help us but in general engine noise shouldnt change when you change the oil or plugs...Originally posted by Janzellotti View Post'79 XS11 F

YES ! THE BEST OIL I'VE FOUND SO FAR IS THE YAMA LUBE. I ADD A LITTLE LESS AND THEN A CUP OF DURA LUBE OR PROLONG. BEEN DOING THIS ON XS650s FOR MANY YEARS. BEEN TOLD MY ENGINES ARE TO QUIET AND MY VALVES ARE GOING TO BURN THEN I TELL THOSE GUYS MY VALVES ARE SET 2 THOUSANDS WIDER THAN MANUAL. THEY START THEIR BIKES AND THE TIN CAN HAS CHANGE IN IT. I'VE BEEN INTO XS650s for 15 years. JUST STARTED TOUCHING UP THIS 81 1100LH AND DID THE SAME, PURRS AND THE FRONT COMES OFF THE GROUND FOR 30 FT. IN 2nd. ONLY HAD IT 4 MONTHS SO TIME WILL TELL. BEEN WORKING ON THE BIKE MORE THAN RIDING BUT THIS SUMMER SHOULD TELL. GOOD LUCK ON YOURS ! BOUGHT A BRANDY NEW XS1100SF RODE FOR 56K AND SOLD TO MY BUD. 20/50 synthetic . Sound quiter out the pipe but a soft ticking up front. clutch would slip a little when getting on it hard but has been strong since the oil change /plugs. i got cheapie plug79 Kenny Roberts TributeComment

Synthetic most always causes clutch slip. If it has any friction modifiers in the oil you will get slip.
These bikes do have a very loud top end.Nathan

Yes i notice the clutch seems to be working better. The oil said it had superior wet clutch protection The clutch is working perfectly now But it just doesn't have the same sound It use to have a real deep sounding seems much quieter now except for the front end. Any suggestions on the best plugs to use. And I'm also in the market for a folding or emergency kick start lever if anybody has 1 let me know.I am still trying to figure out how to post pictures of my bike I tried and ask for a URL79 Kenny Roberts TributeComment

Stand on the right side of the bike, and look down to a point just above the swing arm pivot, (about 2 inches above) and on the front of the cross tube you should see a bracket welded to the cross tube. There should be a wing nut holding the starter lever to the bracket.
