  • What's different on Special's

I currently own a 79 xs1100 special(First Motorcycle). I have been reading here for a while now and trying to learn as much as I can.

I hope this doesn't sound stupid, but what is special about the "Special"?

Is is just a feature package like the "SS" on a camaro or is there more too it. I have noticed from reading that a lot of the parts or mounting of things are different when its a special.

    Thank you

    Steve

Just about everything is different except for the drive train. The front wheel happens to be the same on both.
    2H7 (79) owned since '89
    3H3 owned since '06

Look here for at least some answers.... http://www.xs11.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=78

But like Phil says, other than the motor, swingarm, final drive, and front wheel, most other parts are different. Doesn't mean some won't interchange (but fit/styling won't be the same), but many don't.

          Hi Steve,
nothing too special, it's mostly a styling exercise.
Almost anything you don't like about a Special or a Standard you can swap from one to the other to build your very own custom Frankenbike.
For instance, my Special has a Standard tank to carry that extra gallon of gas.
Mind you, seats and side covers are a bitch. For some eldrich reason almost every year and every type of XS11 has a seat & side cover that's just different enough not to be exchangeable.
