  • Bolt Resto

I am in the process of taking all the bolts off the bike and cleaning them in Apple Cider Vinegar to get the rust off. What I am wanting to know is what I should do to keep them from rusting up again? I was thinking of rinsing the vinegar off with water and then drying them and spraying them down with WD-40 and applying anti-seize when installing them. I might go for SS bolts later on, but I just want to get the bike going for right now.

    Any thoughts?

Get some Evaporust and put them in that. About 10 bucks for a liter which will last a long time. After they have cleaned up, spray the heads with a light coat of paint, or Inox preservative. Inox doesn't wash off, so leaves them protected for quite awhile. WAY better than WD40 which will wash off. Inox is sort of waxy.

I would tend to agree with your , switch to stainless statement.

Why wait to make the switch to SS?

I sold out of the engine kits, but do still have enough hardware for a limited number of carb kits. Here's the original thread about the kits, this lists how many/what size bolts you need for the motor and carbs if you want to buy locally.

I'd be willing to do another 'group buy', but to get economy of scale I need to sell about 20 'engine kits' to keep from ending up with too many leftovers...

I'd have to check current prices on the bulk hardware, and shipping costs have gone up a bit, so costs may be a bit more.

The reason to wait for the switch is that at minimum it is about $50 for the hardware whereas just cleaning and replacing is going to be less than $10. Plus I am not sure that the SS look is what I am going for. I'm not going to have many other shiny engine bits, so it might look odd.

I spent WAY over $50 to replace nearly EVERY bolt with stainless!

Cheap way is clean all your existing bolts, poke some holes with a awl in cardboard, put the bolts in half way and paint them with your favorite hi- temp color. You will probably have to redo them in a couple of years but it will look good for now.
