Hi Everyone. I'm new around here and decided to introduce myself. I just recently picked an xs11 midnight special with all fairings for the awesome price of $300 lol. The bike has 42k miles and runs but the #1 float pin is broken. I want to rebuild the carbs on the bike and I am trying to figure out what year model part I need to get. According to the title the bike is a 1980 but the VIN starts with a 3h3 which is a 1979. Could I get any professional opinions on this.

Finding swapped parts is common on these, so it pays to check what you have. As to the vin, yes a 3H3 is a '79 Special but did you check both the motor and the frame? If they match, it's not a MNS. If the frame says 4H3, then it started out as a MNS but has had a motor replacement.

Spend some time looking over the various 'maintenance', 'repairs', and modifications' forums as there's a wealth of info there.

welcome Fat Daddy to the land of XS11s and the madness of XS11 ownership! I got one as my "starter bike" of my return to riding as a mid-life crisis management step. Well, five years later, I am still riding it and have taken to finding the abused and neglected ones to work on as a hobby. It is a lot of fun.
Definitely post some pics. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for someone either misguided or just misleadingly to list a Special as a Midnight Special. Some do it because it is the rarest of the XS11 bread, and therefore believed to be the most valuable. So it would not shock me if you have a 79 special someone listed as a Midnight Special.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Will be posting some pics very soon. Had a friend just take a look at it for me and it is most definitely a 1979 special. Does not really bother me especially since I got it for $300 and it does run for the most part. wait till you see how this thing looks. The beginnings of fun things...79 SF

FYI, to post pics on this site you need to load them on a hosting site like Photobucket. Then you can post the IMG link in your post here and the picture will show up.
