  • Tight Butterfly Shafts

I started reassembling the butterfly's and the shafts are very tight and don't seem to want to go back in. I am worried about forcing them and damaging the carburetor body. Is there a trick to re installing these? Should I heat the carburetor body? Anyone else have this trouble?

It's a matter of aligning the buttterflies so that they all close properly then adjusting so they all open at the same time. Don };~)

You may need to find which of the carbs they were fitted to and then loosen the screws to get them to align correctly.

It is actually the shafts that don't seem to fit. I had to tap with a hammer to extract them. The butterfly's fit ok.

Just to clarify - it is the shafts from carbs 1 & 4 that are held in by clips and not nuts.

Did you soak these in cleaner ? May have swollen the shaft seals and drying them out may shrink them back to the original size.

              Shafts

I don't know man, something isn't right. I've taken apart numerous sets of both 78/79 and 80/81 carbs. I strip them down to the bare shells and I can tell you that I've never had to pound a shaft out or back into position. Do they start ok in through the first hole then get hung up on the inside of the second or are they hard to start right at the beginning?
I'm thinking that perhaps they may have been gummed up pretty good and so you were tapping them out the ends may have deformed a bit.
If you can, mwasure the end diameters and check for deformation. I'll check some of mine and we'll compare numbers.

The seals are on the outside of the bodies and shouldn't cause a binding problem during insertion of the shafts.

The shafts can have minute 'burrs' on them from the factory machining and assembly, a very light pass with a fine file will clear those off.

The file worked but took a few passes. It appears that the end was hammered to create a bit of a mushroom to make sure that the shaft would not come out. There are small dents in the end of the shaft. Thanks.

Correction - there was no mushroom - the small dents were from me tapping the shafts out. I think the burr theory was correct. Thanks again for the help. I replaced the butterfly's and everything is in order. On to task 20 out of 300.
