While cleaning up the airbox Andreas sold me, I had a chance to look in at the marvels inside of it. Two out of the 4 plastic 'pipes" that come up from the bottom of it and end at the throat of each inlet to the carb are split down their seam. It looks like this is some kind of blowby scavenge for the oil breather? Could someone explain this to me, as I wonder if I need to repair these split pipes for all to be happy happy?

You are correct, it is just a way to scavenge crank case gases. I would not think it would really make any difference if the pipes were cracked or not on the way the bike runs. Plenty of people ditch all of that setup when they go to pods anyways.Nathan

I would agree, The setup is part of the emissions control requirements of that time period. As Nate indicated, it simply takes the crankcase vent gases and "ports" them to each cylinder. While it might not be 100% as efficient with the cracks in those pipes, I seriously doubt anyone would notice a change in performance without some gages and sensors.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Well in that case then, we all concur, and I'm gonna use some gorilla tape to wrap them up. That'll be good enough, rather than disassemble, find magic glue, and try to get them fixed.Bone stock 1980 Special except for the exhaust and crashbars. Oh yeah, and the scabbard for the Winchester Defender.

best you don't take that sucker apart, it's nearly as over-complicated as a BMW twistgrip. It'd take the skills of a watchmaker and the patience of a saint to re-assemble the thing.Fred Hill, S'toon

I might be Leary of putting something in there that can get sucked into the engine if it comes loose like tape might.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
