  • Painting engine components

Hey so I managed to treack down all my parts and am in the process of peicing everything together. Just a question for those out there that would know... i would like to paint the engine components black and eliminate the chrome and metal look. What would be the proper procedure and paint for this.

    Paint

Boy this is going to turn into a long thread. But to answer your immediate question. To do it properly and get the best longest lasting result. Bead blast the casings to remove the preservative and dirt /rust etc. Then powder coat.
This will also be the most expensive method if you don't blast and paint yourself.
However, there is going to be a ton of rattle can suggestions and preparation variations coming to this thread soon.

      Soda Blast

Hi, Just had my engine Soda Blasted. Non abrassive stripped all the paint off. Came up a treat. Ordered Statin PJ1 Paint to repaint the engine. They say this paint is as close to factory as you can get.

Just remember to figure out a way to make sure your paint stays fuel-proof. There is nothing more disheartening than have your carbs pour gas all over your new paint, and watch it dissolve.

          PJ1 Paint

Well so much for PJ1 Paint. Supplier in Australia has run out and has no idea when the next shipment will arrive. Can’t get it shipped from the USA due to it being labelled as dangerous goods. So have gone to VHT rattle can, high temp statin barrel, says it is petrol and oil resistant, Time will tell I guess. Made for motorcycles.

I'm sure that paint will be fine; I'm using the same paint from Rustoleum. I hope it is indeed fuel proof because the first time your carbs drip or puke fuel into the airbox, you will be a very unhappy camper watching your paintjob run down the sides of the engine! Don't ask me how I know.

One thing you need to remember about most any paint is until it's fully cured, fuel spills will probably booger it up. So until you've put the motor through at least 3-4 heat cycles, be very careful to keep gas/sovents off the paint...

Sage advice indeed. I realized I painted the area of my engine right under the airbox/carbs with Rustoleum High Temp silver (which matches exactly their aluminum engine paint). Now I need to repaint that area with the engine paint that IS fuel resistant. I hope I can just go over the hi temp paint, without any hassles. Don't see why not though, same company should be compatible. (He said tempting the fates)

                  2k

Use a 2K paint, you can get in spray bombs now also Why not install a Pingel and not have fuel leak on your motor, into your crank case, on to your main and rod bearings and then a motor rebuild
