  • 2nd Gear

I am having problems shifting into 2nd gear, it basically never ingages or gets stuck until I double clutch. My work around has been to bypass second gear and go straight to 3rd. I have been told this is probably a shift fork (a $600 job). Is there a way to verify this? How easy is it to do myself? Thanks

Check the thread in the tech tip section. This problem is well addressed there.

      Hey there Pshaw,

Check out my reply to the fellow with NO 1st gear, same info. I am not a pro mech, just what I learned in highschool shop and OJT working on my own cars and then bike, and I have done the Dremmel fix on my bike, along with 2 other XJ's. Your shift forks are probably okay as long as you haven't held your foot up against it trying to keep it in gear for very long!! Helpful to have a decent set of tools, and a few friends around to help flip the bike over onto its back, easier to work on the tranny that way!!
