  • Projector lens driving light installation.

    Since I removed the Bimmer fairing from my bike, I've hardly used my case guard mounted driving lights due to the reflected glare coming of the shiny bits at the front of the bike, so they're gone now.


    ^ The way it was

    Had a look around at alternatives and came up with a pair of these


    ^ A pair of 2" projector lens driving lights. I reckoned I could get them to fit just about anywhere, due to their small physical size.

    I received the kit, then set about planning their installation............................. and modification.

    ^ A 50 watt HID conversion kit, complete with some extension leads to get the ballasts away from the already overcrowded under-tank area.


    ^ Yes, I've been warned! Now down to business.

    Fabbed up a bracket to mount the lights just below the headlight (out front, no possible reflection from these), and another to be fitted where the toolbox lived, to mount the ballasts and act as a heat sink for them. I gave them a coat of paint and waited for them to dry so I could fit them, and waited.....................................and waited........................................and waited etc, etc.
    While I was waiting, Steptoe rang and we were discussing our projects, and he suggested I stick them in the oven and bake them. A great idea in theory, but we'd gotten a brand new oven this past XSmas, and I really wanted to live for a bit longer, so I dragged out the old BBQ and cooked them on a medium heat for a bit over an hour, then let them cool off naturally.


    ^ Baked to perfection!

    I had thought of swapping triple clamps over, so I'd have a mounting point at the front of the bottom clamps, but decided to stick with the original, and made the brackets loop around from the rear bolts, and across the front.


    ^ Much harder this way, but I'm happy with the result.


    ^ After fabbing up a modified (easy access) headlight adjuster, I bolted the lights on and they fit perfect! The adjuster mod was essential, as I'm already running a HID headlight, and now have compliant, long travel shocks on the rear so any change in load - eg, trailer etc, means i can quickly adjust the headlight to avoid blinding oncoming traffic.


    ^ rear bracket with ballasts mounted, ready for fitting.


    ^ Bracket fitted straight into the spot occupied by the toolbox. It now lives in my Gearsack bag side pocket.


    ^ test firing of the lights after finishing off the wiring.


    ^ Quite bright from the front.
    Now, if it will only stop bucketing down outside, so i can take it for a test run!
    I'll post the results as they come to hand.

    I like the mod, can you give us a shot of the bike with a little wider angle please?

      No worries, Peter.
      Now if it stops raining long enough for me to get the garage door open and step back a bit, I will certainly oblige. (Hasn't done so for 3 days now)

        Mine had these mounted on when I got the bike and I appreciate the extra light it gives me. Just a simple flat bar mount. I slightly angel each one out to add light to the ditch lines and so there isn't to much light in on coming drivers eyes. I alsolike the added visibility

          It's still pissing down outside, but here's some I took just to give you a better idea







          This'd be a much easier mod to do on the US spec Specials, as they haven't got those turn signal mounts and the big headlight to deal with.
          Will get some outside pics when possible.

            That's a tight install, those look real nice tucked in under the headlight like that.

            I like the large round headlight too. I'm not sure the projectors would look as good with a square headlight.

              Great mod, very neatly done! I just acquired one projector headlight and ballast from a Lexus that I'm planning on mounting into a fairing I'm building for one of my project bikes. Do you feel one projector light is equal to a traditional headlight?

              I've got more questions, hope yer feeling patient...

              Do your lights have hi/lo beams? Mine does - it's a solenoid controlled shutter that drops over the bulb for lo beam. Weird.

              One more if ya don't mind...

              The plug and wires are unmarked as to which is negative or positive. Does it matter? My ignorance of electramatricity is showing...

                Regarding your question about the single Projector being the equivalent to a standard headlight, here's a link to TC's thread on the subject. - CLICK
                In my opinion, the difference is like comparing night & day. The night being the standard headlight.
                My projectors are only single beam driving lights, though they still have a physical cutoff fitted in the housing to restrict light being beamed too highly out of the lens (It's a pity as I really wanted an unrestricted beam for these, as my headlight has a cutoff shield built onto the bulb which works on both HI and Lo and I wanted to fill the dark void above that line at night. I guess I'll just point these up higher to get the spread I want.
                The headlight uses a solenoid for changing Hi and low beams, which is termed BIxenon for your reference.
                Seeing that your lens, bulb and ballast is coming out of a car, hopefully, it is still the standard colour bulb fitted. You may be lucky and find a sticker or marking on it to identify the colour temperature, 3000 is the lowest you can get and is a very yellow beam, 4300 is a normal (and best) one to have. If you set the light up and test it but it has a bluish - violet colour, pull it out and order one of the 4300k bulbs as the blue ones are hopeless in any kind of bad weather with no penetration of the beam.

                Regarding the colour coding of the wires, most aftermarket kits have the usual RED = active, Black = negative, but you car one may just be all black wires. I wouldn't risk hooking it up until you know which is which because of the voltages involved with these units.
                Maybe a quick trip to an autoelectrician may be in order to verify things first.
