No big increase in value that I have seen, a 1980 mint midnight special brought $4000.00+ a while back but it was from a museume. The honda CBX's bring big $$$, but limited production on those, the XS1100's sold in the ton's Still, it is hard to put a price on how much fun you can have on one

When I bought my all stock, like new 1980 xs1100 Special 6 months ago I paid $2,300 for it. Looked and ran like new, needed only new consumables. I just turned down a very valid cash offer of $4,500 for it 2 weeks ago but I declined his offer simply because i really love this bike and it does everything I want a bike to do. Perhaps I'll sell it one day but for now I'm planning on riding the heck out of it.

All stock, mint bikes will always bring a premium price depending on rarity and the buyer. 'Restored' bikes can do the same, but the cost of exactly duplicating all the OEM finishes will far exceed what you'll get for it. Anything less than a 'perfect' restore makes it just another nice old bike, worth maybe a small amount over a decent 'survivor' but not likely.

These are great bikes.... but not much of an investment...

I feel the same about my SF. Nostalgic perhaps, it's the only thing left from my youth unless you count aches and pains. There isn't enough money that could make me sell it. The others may be faster or prettier, but the SF has carried me far and wide, and never let me down. If I was cash strapped enough, I start selling off everything else I own; but that bike and I will finish our days, together.

The low resale value of 70s Japanese bikes allows those of us who cant afford a new bike (or just dont want debt) an opportunity to own a nice fast bike. Im nearly done fixing up a 1979 GS1000 for my brother. He could never get out of it what he has into it but he is fine with that because he plans to enjoy the classic Suzuki.

Hi Jeff,
yes, but you gotta wait another ~50 years to hit the big bucks.
(Note that in 1955 I passed up the opportunity to buy a complete Vincent Black Shadow basket-case for $50.)
As posted, 1980 new cost ~$3,000.
$3,000 inflated to 2013 = ~$9,000.
Average cost of a 2013 1,100 cc bike ~ $12,000
Had you invested $3,000 in 1980 at 10% you'd have $24,000 by now.

I have about $4500.00 in my 79SF, but that was invested over years of improvments / fixes and the purchase price I paid of $2500.00. The couple times I listed it for $2500.00 all I got was low ball offers. Supply and demand, many many XS1100's were made and thanks to being a good bike, many are still out there.

Add to that, Ebay and Craigslist, and the Guy looking to buy one has lots to choise from if he is not in a hurry, the Guy trying to sell one has lots of competition form other sellers, some real motovated in this economy

I have faimly members that used to get BIG bucks for StarWars and Barbie stuff before Ebay took off, now you can't get 10c on the dollar Thus the prices of ours VS the rare Jap bikes like the CBX, I have seen nice ones of those bring $15,000.00+. Supply and Demand

The best way to get a feel for what a thing is worth on the market is to see what they are selling / asking for them. Here is a bunch of XS1100's to gauge the current market buy. Eight of them are Midnights at $2000.00 or less.

you all are great, I ride mine daily and have had no problems with it other than keeping gas in it cause of the small tank. I can only go like 100-110 miles on a tank load

I get to blast up and down the highway on my $1500- investment. Could care less what happens to the value.
My mint 650 BSA would fetch big bucks these days, but I would have had to keep it running and shiny for 50 years.
If it was worth $10,000- today I would have made $200- per year. $300- per year at $15,000-. Probably be smarter to just save the money.
My 53 Bentley went from $10,000- to $16,500, while I owned it for twenty years.
That looks like $325- per year, but it cost me more than that, to insure it and keep it running.
Right now I am thinking beer with a nice lady makes more sense.

I bought my XS thinking I would "someday" do a complet resto on it. The PO said it had never been riden in the rain and it looked like a good start. I paid $2,600.00 + $500.00 shipping and have spent $$$ tracking down the OEM exaust (had 4 into 2 Mac when i bought it) and fixing stuff. I now have way more in it then i will ever get out of it, but that is how it is with "ALMOST" all bikes and car's it is the fun we have with them that counts

Now I don't have a garage and i see a little more rust here and there on her but I am getting a little rusty myself, so I just don't look too close, and get on and ride

bought my 79 xs1100f for $400 dollars 200$ later and about 18 hrs into it its the best bikie ive ever owned i dont think i could ever get rid of it now
