Check for air leaks into your exhaust . . . unburned fuel pops in the exhaust if outside air can enter the exhaust . . . say at the port joints or at the muffler connections (or rust holes).

Are you on throttle when it happens, or off throttle? Off throttle is a bit normal, usually means a lean condition.
Could be rich and getting some unburned gas in the exhaust. remember the plugs in an XS fire twice, once at compression and again at exhaust.
Look for air leaks, float settings, and so on.
What do you plugs look like? Try a throttle chop and read the plugs.
Might search the site for carbs and see all the stuff to check.
