    do 78,79 80,81 xs1100's use the same tci unit? are they all interchangeable?

    81's are different.

      The '78-80 are the same and will be marked 2H7 in the first three digits of the part number. The '81 looks the same, but is different internally and will have a 4R0 part number.

          Best bet is to do your homework with a little research as you have done.

            I have actually informed an ebay seller that he had a tci mislabeled. His response was "my boss put the tag on the ignition unit and has been doing this for a long time and knows what he is taking about." Dumb @$$

                Most of them just decide to break bikes for money, post an add they take junk bikes, and go pick them up, and advertising the parts. Only a few of them have a clue what they are selling.

                So yes, you have to be smart to know what you need. Smarter than the sellers are, unfortunately. I often let them know they have no clue and they tell me "that is whats on the title" or I get no response at all.

                  Ebay has now put all XS's of all cc's in the same catagory so you have to read the description and look at the pics closely so you don't end up with XS400 parts mistakenly.
