  • '79 Standard Cafe'.

This is my '79 Standard that I purchased off a former board member last year in it's current incarnation. When I picked it up, it was already modified and felt the bike was a good candidate for a cafe build.
The motor is stock, trans issues corrected, 4-1 pipes of unknown brand with a single-baffle slash-cut chrome balogna on the end. The bike has rear sets, a TKat fork brace, progressive springs, clip-on's, an 8" H4 headlamp off an '80 Virago, a modified stock seat pan and custom upholstery, factory welds washed over with tig torch and seam-filled, battery relocation and electrical under seat pan now. Please forgive the crappy cellphone pics.

This is how she sits now:

I welded and shaved the triple tree to remove the old bar mounts:

A pic of how she used to be:

    Great Start !!!

Nice job on the triple tree.

What are the disc rotors off of, or are they stock drilled ?

Here's a site that may interest you:

They're drilled stockers. Looking at a Duc' set-up though.

      And yeah, Thanks! No kidding!

        Hi Shawn and welcome,
looks like it's going to be a nice bike even if this old fat man couldn't reach down to those clip on handlebars.
        BTW, I gotta ask,
are you building the bike in your bedroom or are you sleeping in the garage?

Haha! No, That's the basement. The bike has started to move from the garage to there now. No heat in the garage...umm yeah, that's my excuse

Yeah, the bars are low, but at least I made the seat comfortable and my belly can rest on the tank

            Hi Shawn,
My buddy built a 2-piece boat in his basement. The plans didn't have the 2-part feature and the plywood & stuff went down there easy enough but there was this bend in the stairwell - - -
Likewise, it may be easier to get a 200lb rolling chassis down into the basement than to get a complete 500lb bike back up out of it.

I should clarify; next to the bike (behind me in the first photo) is the garage door, technically my shop. The garage door opens up onto my property. My downstairs tv however, is inside the house and the carpet is nice on the knees when working on this thing. No worries, i won't be dragging this pig up any stairs lol!
You probably notice the lack of parts laying around as well because they're all on every surface of my garage. Looks like an exploded diagram in there right now.
A boat in his basement? awesome. Whatever works right?

I like the big headlight. The instrument cluster is a feature of the XS1100 standard that has no visual appeal to me. The big headlight hides it. I'd keep the big headlight even if the instrument panel was gone. It looks good!

Thanks. The instruments have been dropped about an inch too so they hide a bit better. Their days are numbered though, going with a smaller round gauge and custom idiot lights.

Just remember that the tach runs off of the generator pulses rather than the spark plugs and the speedo has an oddball ratio of something like 2.9:1 rather than the common 2:1. So unless you are going electronic you don't really have much for options.

                        Hi Shawn,
                        adding to Nate's post.
Correct ratio small diameter speedos can be had at MikesXS.
Be warned, you only get what you pay for and they don't cost much.
Yes you can swap in a small tach that's triggered by a sparkplug wire but you lose the fuel gauge and the stock tach's secondary function of zeroing itself if the alternator quits.
Perhaps you'd like the look of a Special's round gauges?
Speedo drops right on. Tach too but it's red "low fuel" light won't work with the Standard's rheostat level sender. It will work with the Special's thermistor level sender that in turn will fit in your Standard tank.
Mount it with the wires pointing forward though or it'll be upside down and give an unhelpful wrong reading.

To add to Fred's suggestion. Not ALL of mikesxs Speedos have the correct ratio, so buyer beware. And they are not really labled well.

Thank you all for the replies and heads-up. I'll be looking into options and I am considering electronic since I do have a Yamaha sport fairing that I may run with a 7" light as a change of pace. It may give me more mounting options. For now, the wiring harness is staying original to the bike minus a fuse panel upgrade. This is my first bike in years so I appreciate the constructive feedback!

I'll post progress as I go along. Cheers.
