  • And So It Begins...

I have just ordered an 1179cc big bore kit for ol' Twilite Special. You see, there is this FJ1100 (SWMBO's) sitting next to it in the garage, and I'd like to have half a chance of keeping up with it. Currently I'm running an engine from an 82 XJ11 but I'm using the original engine for the mods. Original engine engine has fairly new crank & rod bearings, shift drum, and forks, but was leaking oil from crankcase to cylinders joint, so instead of buying new gaskets, I had this 13k mile XJ motor laying around...You can guess the rest.
Tore it apart yesterday. Valves look good, gonna lap 'em in next week. Also gonna' freshen up the clutch. I will probably remove the trans from Organ Donor, and have the gears undercut, and swap it into the original engine. I don't want all that newfound power just bouncin' 'round inside the crankcase. I did the 'Black & Decker' fix to the original engine's trans years ago, but I would hate to have to fix it again once the work is all done, and I have the motors swapped out.
If any of you have any tips on the what I'm about to undertake, please let me know.
I shouldn't have any problems doing the work , as I am a mechanic (did I spell it right?) in real life, not just here in the forum, I have lots of tools, and I can read the manual. I did go through the original engine 11 years ago, but I have killed many brain cells since then...
When first went through the engine, I discovered that 1100 isn't the engine size...it's the number parts inside it! I had stuff scattered all over the place!
    Well wish me luck...

While you have the gears out polish the face of the gear dogs on a sheet of emery paper taped down to a precision flat surface. This will greatly improve shifing.
