  • middle drive unit ?

    on the top surface of the middle drive unit of my '80 special there is a letter "c" cast onto the surface. on the spare unit i have there is a letter "k".
    is this significant? thanks

    Hi Mark,
    there you go, cleaning things again. If you hadn't removed the grease and crud that was hiding them those letters wouldn't have bothered you.
    Seriously though, cast letters usually show which sub-contractor supplied the casting and shouldn't effect anything.
    Stamped in letters or numbers tend to have more significance, especially if they are on the two halves of a unit that was machined as a matched set.

      Fred pretty much hit it. Cast numbers or letters can be many different things; which casting mold was used, when it was made, maybe a later minor revision to the casting, etc. If you can find the actual part number cast in, that's the one that's important. Any others are usually just 'internal notes' by the manufacturer to allow them to track it's orgin. Generally the only time these have any importance is to the very hard-core restorers who demand matching date codes on all parts to be absolutely 'correct'....

        thanks for the informative reply, guys.
        and fred, i only found that letter because since i was done polishing the bottom of my pistons and chroming the inside of my oil filter housing i had some free time on my hands
