  • Case Splitting Advice

I'm real close to being able to split my case halves and am just looking for some general advice. I've read through the tips on the gear fix and am fairly familiar with the workings of the drive gears, but there is a lot more to splitting the cases. There are 3-4 more shafts in there turning various things.

Here's where I'm at. I have the head and jugs removed along with the pistons. The clutch basket is out. The oils pump is removed, along with a few of the larger circlips on the throttle side of the bike. I've remove the shift cam assembly where the little pegs go. I have not removed any of the major rotating shafts in the upper or lower cases.

My question is how should I go about splitting them now. I will be reading along the repair manual step for step, but the pics are a little hard to see. Everything I've read says to flip the engine over for better access to the gears. Is that the best way?

This is a total dis-assembly because I'm painting my case halves.

A couple of things come to mind but it was a while ago since I split one and there was more than one beer involved.
Pull the rotor before splitting the cases. That side will not split all the way with it installed. It is a lot easier to take off before too.
Do Not forget the bolt under the crankcase breather cover. Many have and they can be hard to come by.
Take your time and recheck everything before trying to pry them apart. I found that light raps with a small dead-blow hammer loosened everything up nicely. If you have to pry things, something may still be holding it. Any thing that looks like it attaches to both halves probably does
Take a few pictures when doing the dis-assembly. That can really help with finding just where or how a part fits later.
Just a couple of suggestions until someone with more experience splitting cases replies. Biggest thing I found wrong with how I did it was I tried to rush it too much and wish I had read what I just typed before my first attempt at it. The time you take to do it right will pay you back later, so if in doubt ask.

When you say rotor, are you talking about the alternator side? I wanted to remove that today but it looks like a large round wedge keeping it on. I was going to go buy a large bolt tomorrow and see if that pulls it out so I can remove it. I will take pictures tomorrow and as I go from this point on, so far I can remember everything, but gears are a PITA.

I finally got to see my dogs and slots. This trannsmission is gonna work out fine. I see the #2 gear now. The slots are round off but the dogs are not too bad. That makes it easier. I also see the washer that needs to be moved. This is going to be an easy gear fix. I'm going to go ahead and do them all while I'm in there. The shift forks are in great shape.
