  • 2nd Gear Fix for me?

For my '79 XX, I am need of the 2nd gear fix detailed in the tech forum.
However, I am only of moderate tehnical skills. Consequently, I am willing to pay to have it done. I live in the Chicago area. Does anybody have any suggestions as to who or where I might have the service performed for me?

    Thanks.

No shop is going to do that for you. They would put new gears in only, very spendy.

You might find someone here though that you could mail the gears too that would grind them and then mail them back.

There has to be someone in the Chi-town area that works on older/vintage bikes I would think. I'd call around to a few Yamaha shops for possible referrals or just google some different key words. Keep us posted and good luck.

I took a quick look and this place seems to stand out with great reviews.

I'd give them a call, if they can't help you I think they could help steer you to a place that can.

Depending what you want done, you will have trouble getting any one with a legitimate business to do the repair. Meaning, no business will do the dremel work, like Nate pointed out, you will need to buy new gears.

Depending on the tools and willingness you have, it can be dine by an ametuer, the tech tip is pretty step by step.

Chicago is a big place. There has to be someone there who will do it. There are a lot of places building cafe bikes these days, and those folks have to get creative. It seems I read about someone having their dogs ground by a licensed professional shop. It could have been on the triples forum, as those bikes suffer the same issue. Most of the gears are NLA, so that leaves few options for the fix. I am sure somebody up there can help you.

If you weren't so far (5 hours) from me, I'd ride up and do it. Did the same for another member in Iowa a while back. Start-to-finish, it took about 4 hours.

One other shot in the dark is calling EMI or some other motorcycle mechanic school and seeing if a student/teacher would take on the project, with the help of a qualified teacher and all the support here it could be worth a shot.
Wouldn't hurt to call and ask.

You wont find a shop willing to do it. Even if you brought in the motor with new gears (dog and pinion) they will not do it on the bench. My local shop told me- (in 2009) that they have customers bringing in their crotch rocket engines with a blown out 2nd gear from wheelies. Their price to put in new gears is from $1200 to $1500 and thats having the customer pull the engine and bringing it in. If the bike is valuable to you you really need to offer up enough $$ for a member to come to you to do the fix or you need to load it on a trailer and go to said member.

You can handle this job, many others have said the same thing as you and have completed this repair no problem. All the info you need for the repair is right here on this forum, and so are the members to answer any questions you may have. The engine cases DO NOT need to be split, the repair can be done thru the oil pan of the engine. You don't want to pay a shop to learn how to work on your bike, $$$, JMHO

Even after buying the tools needed to do the 2nd gear fix (if you don't have them), you'll still be money ahead...
