  • No speedo or neutral indicator light

Put the battery in the bike today and noticed that my speedometer and neutral indicator light are not working. All other lights seem to be functioning properly as is the tach lights.
The speedo lights worked a month ago when I installed my HID conversion and I haven't made any changes. It looks to me like the speedo, tach, and neutral light are on the same circuit, so I am a bit confused.

Anyone have this happen before? It isn't as simple as the neutral light is burnt out is it?

    Thanks for any help

On the SF, the lights you had go out are fed from the Reserve lighting unit. The reserve lighting unit is removed or bypassed as part of the HIG upgrade. So check the bypass wire you installed as part of that work.

Both of those bulbs get their power from the blu/blk wire at the headlight relay. Do you still have a headlight relay or did you bypass it with your HID installation? This wire will be a blu wire (not one with single bullet connector) under the headlight bucket in one of the speedometer plugs. Check for voltage there. If you still have your headlight relay installed, the engine must first be started for voltage to be present at that blu wire. GL

Edit: As Don said, the RLU will supply power to that headlight relay so yes check the blu/blk wire for current there first.

I did check the blue/black wire at the rlu this morning and there is 11v there.
you are correct that I removed the rlu. I jumped the blue/yel and blue/black, and blue/green and yellow. As for the relay, there is 11.5 at the blue wire. I kick the bike over once to turn the lights on. The tach light works until I pull the relay. I am really confused because the wiring diagram shows that the speedo, nuetral, and tach should be on the same circuit.

Everything worked fine after I initially installed the HID. Minus the high beam indicator of course.

I'll give some more recent background to see if it helps. After the HID install I pulled the battery and the bike sat for about a month. Friday I finally got around to finishing my wiring job for a temp guage I installed on the handle bars. I have a temp sensor in the oil pan and in a modifyed drain bolt in my xs750 FD.

I had all the wiring ran from the pan and FD to a weatherpack connector near the turn signal and dimmer connector near the coils. I then routed those wires with the others up to the turn aignal/dimmer switch. I used a bottom cover from a '81 special parts bike I had that had the 4 way flasher function to mount a 1P2T slider switch to switch between sensors for my gauge. I had to modify the '81turn cancel unit to use and solder my wires on it as the slot is wider for the turn signal/canceler. I put everything together and the turn signals work, and the dimmer/motor works fine.

Well, thanks for the tips guys.

Now I wish you wouldn't have helped cuz I feel like a dumb @$$. I noticed only my left front turn signal was intermittent so I was checking that out and saw that while digging in the bucket my oil and fuel lights were flashing intermittently as well. So I unplugged all connectors and replugged them and bam! Speedi and nuertal lights.

Still have an intermittent short on the LF turn signal, but oh well.

Thanks fellas for giving me a reason to come back out to the garage. At 15F I didnt have the motivation myself.
