  • Special Headlight / Gauges on a Standard?

Going to look at a 1980 Standard this weekend, but it's missing the headlight and housing as well as the gauges.

I have a set of Special gauges and headlight which are round and not square like the Standard.

Anyone did a Special to Standard swap and have any insight or pointers?
Not sure if it's a "plug and play"..

    Thanks in advance.

Pretty much plug and play, but the special guages use a fuel warning light which needs the special thermistor in the tank rather than the float that is in the standard tank.

Also with the headlight ears, they need to be a little shorter. The distance between the upper and lower triple trees is a little shorter on the standard.

It's not quite plug 'n play, but close. The speedo swaps no problem, but the indicator lights and tach plugs won't match up. The problem is Yamaha moved some of the 'standard' indicator lights into the tach on the Special, so you'll have to reconfigure the plugs on either the main harness or those two parts. The good news is all the wire colors match up for the same function on both models, so it's easy to figure out.

You'll also have to fab up a headlight adjustment bracket or modify the Special one if you have it. You need to cut 5/8" off the ears as Nate noted....

Thanks guys, very do-able then. As long as the bike isnt complete POO, I'll have another one to tinker with.

Same guy has a XJ11, so may be able to double up.

Don't expect much interchange with the XJ. Other than the driveline, pretty much everything else is different....

From the fact that it is missing parts, it sounds like a parts bike and there might be a good reason for that. You might want to take with you a spark plug wrench, a set of jumpers and a compression tester.

Just brought the XS home. All that was missing was the H/L and gauges and the LH side cover. Started up, rode it around his block a few times, all better than expected. Left the XJ there as he was TOO proud of it as far as $$.

yeah and Prev Owner was a stand up guy. He had been charging the battery as he said it was a bit waek and wasnt sure if it would hold the charge. So he had a brand new ( mant. free even) in the box spare just in case. Good to go with o/m and s/m and even let me have the king/queen seat
