Say gents, what's a good starting spot for the pilot screws? If the damned bike ever starts, what criteria would I use to adjust the pilots? Vacuum? Colortune? Prayer?
1980G, stock everything.

But, geez, Cap...I, of course, took your advice and checked my diaphragms and springs, finding the two quick ones had folded a bit as I put them back together. When those were done, all the slides held or dropped slowly with the hotdog hole blocked, just as you said.
Full of confidence, I hooked everything back up, put in some new gas, got all my riding gear on, and hit the starter, which granked and cranked, with an occasional pop, but no joy.
Just now, I produced a 12 gauge-quality backfire, so I'm fishing for answers...again.

2 1/2 to 3 turns out from lightly seated will get it to run well enough to colour tune. Put a couple hundred miles on it, then check your plugs. They are a better indicator then anything else.

Thanks, that's better,
Now we know where the carbs stand. Well, since you had the tank off, were you messing with the wiring to the coils? The left coil has an orange wire to it, the right has a gray wire to it. The left one fire plugs 1 and 4, and the right one fire 2 and 3.
Check that, then check back.
Once again, we'll wait.
Your right LOHO they are a heavy old brutes. If you could push it 5 or 6 miles my hats off to you. If mine ever break down that far from help, I'm pushing it as far as a ditch and camoflaging it until I can get a trailer to get it home.
As to your problem, check for spark, fuel and make sure there isn't any mice living in your air box. After you determine these things, it's a simple matter of getting them all to the same place at the right time. Simple eh!
