  • Dynatek Mini 3Ω Coils

I was wondering if anyone has used these on their XS11. For a couple bucks more they seem like a good choice to fit in the tight stock coil location. The wire set should be easy to get, the Accel Supercoil uses this same type.

Phil, these coils have come up before. You can't use them on the XS unless you swap to an aftermarket ignition box that has 'dwell control' (a feature the XS TCI lacks), without that they'll burn up. This is the explanation that I was given by a Dyna tech as I called them before buying...

They'd be perfect if only they would work....

Thanks Steve, now I remember this being discussed before. Guess I'll have to go with something else.

Phil, depending on the purpose of your replacement. A good replacement that is readily available on ebay is the VF1000 coils. Some of the Magna lines used the same coils. I am running them on my bike, and put them on Steppenwolf's as well.

Thanks Don, the real reason I was thinking of replacing the XJ11 coils I am running now is they are not hot enough to fire the colortune plug. My Accel coils on my other bike fire that sucker just fine. I ended up tuning the mixture screws using the highest vacuum reading method and everything is just fine now. I saved $130 so I am still the king of the cheapazz.

Phil, How do you tune the mix screws this way? Is there a thread out there that I haven't seen?

The 'highest vacuum' method for adjusting the idle mixture screws is easy...

While doing your carb sync, after getting equal vacuum readings on each carb by adjusting the throttle openings, set your idle speed to the recommended 1000-1100 rpm. Then go back and adjust the idle mixture screws (assuming that they're all at least close) to get the highest vacuum reading at each carb. This may throw the sync back off, you may have to repeat the process a few times. Once you have steady equal readings across all carbs, you're done!

Yep, it won't be a huge change in the vacuum reading. Mine only changed probably less than 1 line on the gauge. There should be some threads out there describing it better.
