  • Piston Rings

Okay, I need more advise. I have had my cylinders honed. The stange looking mark on the cylinder walls turns out to be nothing but a water mark. The shop did a nice job, they look real good. So, I start looking for new standard rings. Yamaha has them for a mere $58.00 a sent. That's $232 for 4. What!!!!!!!!!!!!
I see a set of 4 on ebay for $88. Are these okay? http://www.ebay.com/itm/YAMAHA-XJ110...b26991&vxp=mtr
The part # matches, but they are not OEM. What to do?

    oem vs aftermarket parts

fwiw, last year my '79 sr500 headgasket started to weep a little oil so i took the motor apart to replace the gasket. i bought an aftermarket gasket that was "just as good as oem" and saved about $25.00. all was well until i was out in the middle of death valley on an annual ride with my vjmc club and that head gasket failed and let go in the heat. i was lucky and the damage was confined to a rebore, new wiseco piston and rings, all new OEM gaskets and a valve job. $400 later i was kicking myself for cheaping out on that damn cheap gasket. now for me, all critical parts are oem. of course, ymmv

Dale, Sept of last year, I bought a set of 4 off ebay for $85 and I'd swear that those boxes are exactly the same. I remember the red/blue/yellow striping on the box. The part numbers (3J2-11610-00) are right size for pistons that are the stock size.
The seller I got mine from is different than yours.
They fit fine and I needed to size one or two of them with my dremel. (the manual tells you to put them into the jug and check the feeler gauge in the gap and if it's too tight, shave some off.

Here's the 2 threads where I talked about my piston replacement. I hope it helps inform you a little.

        Hey George,
I'm assuming that the rings you installed seated okay and are working good. ?

Yep, got about 30K miles on them so far this year.
I followed the advice found in this site about the 'break in'.
I wish I had a 2nd set of hands when trying to lower the jugs into place. 2 pistons at a time into the jugs while trying to keep those rings compressed what a real PITA.

One thing I should have done when I had the jugs off is replace the lower base gasket. I had one in my gasket kit, but I listened to some here and just put on gasket sealer. (not yamabond like a should have) and now I've got seepage, but not quite a leak though.
Now that I've got my SG up and running, my G is going to get overhauled, including that base gasket.
