  • TCI repair update

    News flash!

Last night, while surfing the net in search for a source for the transistors used in the 78-80 TCI boxes, I stumbled upon a forum that caters to audiophiles, particularly those that repair their own and other's equipment. (Must be a forum for every conceivable interest. Ya gotta love the Internet!)

One of the members, in reply to someone asking for a source for the C 458 transistors that I was looking for, and for another few requests from others on that board, put forth the information that those transistors were a product of Hitachi, and were used in a variety of Jap consumer product back then. His experience, along with a number of others on the board, was that after a number of years, they would sporadically fail, and when he encountered them in his repair work, he would replace them all as a preventative measure.
Anyway, I would now like to ask, beseech, entreat, even BEG you, if you have a TCI that is dead, and you have tried the Davinci fix, espoused by Randy, of re soldering the output pins, without restoring it to life, PLEASE, do not throw it away. It may be fixable.
PM me, and lets see if there is some way to keep it from going to the dump. There are only so many in existence, and if it is true that the transistors fail, but can be replaced, we can save the remaining ones and keep the sparks in our love affairs for years to come.
To quote a couple of my hero's, Bartells and James, "Thank you for your support".

No need, CZ, that is a 2SC458. Hitachi discontinued it, Here is the data sheet:

Modern equivalent replacements are available at NTE Electronics for $1.29

I wish someone would find a replacement for the IC in the tachs and start fixing those. There's a few hundred thousand jumpy or dead tachs out there that need repair.

        tach fix

i'll second that. my tach works fine up to about 6,000 then gets jumpy. i'd rather get this one modded to work right than replace it.

          Greg;

You got the number of that IC?

Thanks Randy, that is another "or equivalent". The audio guys were using 2SC2240, 2sc-1775 or 2sc-1815. In this application, I don't think the "noise" factor is anything to worry about, and it seems that there are a number of transistors that will interchange. I have some BC 639's, with the same pinout, and I am going to solder in one of them to replace the bad Q3 on this board. I'll scope it and see if the trace matches the Q13 trace, and if so, I'll button it back up and put it in service. We'll see.

Also, do you see the 120 ohm, 2 watt resister, on the B input, numbered as resister 24? I don't want to disturb this one, (conformal coating issues) to look under it for the number, and I can't find an R 24 anywhere else on the board.
            Fun and games.

I have one apart at home. I'll see if I can read the number when I get home Randy.

Or, I could just send you a circuit board. I have one out.

CZ, I don't understand your question. You know the value, what do you need? And do I see what? Is there a photo somewhere that you're referencing?

Sure, if you can get a clear photo that shows the part # that would be fine.

                        Yep, I phrased that wrong.
The big ceramic resister that is the first component in line after the B terminal, sets over the board and hides the R number printed on the board. That is what I think. I would like to know if someone has taken that resister off, and if there is an R number printed on the board under it.
I was asking, that if you had taken that resister off, did you see that number, R24 , printed under it.
"See" being used in the metaphoric sense, not in the literal sense.
A better phrasing would be, "Do you think the 120 ohm, 2 watt resister, etc. etc."
                        Basically, I'm trying to find R 24.
                        Sorry for the confusion, CZ

That would be real helpful. I will pay the postage up here, and keep you updated on it's attempted resuscitation.

OK. No, I have not removed one, but I could pop it off one of my donor boards and let you know.
