Yes, that is typically a sign of a VERY lean condition. Sounds like there is something plugging up the pilot circuit in that carb.

OK so i took off the carbs multiple times today.Examined everything and cleaned with spray. The bike went from running on full choke only to no choke. The bike idles fine now.All the pipes when i sprayed water on them are hot except the pipe closest to the clutch.I can actually touch it and the water just runs off of it.Is this pipe/carb getting fuel?I took out the plug and have spark but its not getting hot. Also not getting any smoke like i was before. What am i missing?1980 XS1100 SG

JAT but you could pull the wire off the offending cylinder and attach another plug to it but leave the existing plug in the head. Ground that plug to the engine firmly. Then start the bike and run it a minute or so. That way you kill two birds with one stone.
You get to be sure there is spark at the offending cylinder, and when you pull the plug from the head that had no wire attached it should be wet with fuel. This wont tell you if you are getting the correct fuel to that cylinder but if the plug is wet then some is getting through for sure.
Also by attaching a working plug to the disconnected wire and grounding it will prevent damage to the TCI.2-79 XS1100 SF

OK thanks Schming! Also does anyone think this is a coil issue? If the coil is not firing or a weak spark would it cause the heat issue?I'm thinking a weak spark not always firing.I put the new wires in old coils about 2 years ago.I have a never used set to try.1980 XS1100 SG

Spraying some carb spray is not the right way to clean yer carbs. You really need to remove ALL the jets, clean each one (I let them soak in a gallon can of carb cleaner for about a half an hour and blow clean with compressed air). Then carb spray all the passages, then hit 'em with compressed air. The carbs really need to be spotless to function right. Bench synch, install, synch, adjust idle mix, and re-synch. No shortcuts allowed...

OK so i think i found an issue. After work today i went to my storage unit to try the test Rasputin told me to do.I'm getting a nice fat spark and when i went to go remove the spark plug in the cylinder (#1) it was dry.Curious i tried it again-same results.I went and removed the bolt from the bottom of the float bowl and held a rag so i wouldn't get soaked and a small amount came out(maybe a teaspoon)The short fuel line that was hooked to the petcock came off so i went to put it on and noticed it was plugged with crap. The line goes from the petcock left side to #1 on the octy.It was plugged so my question is this-how much fuel should be in the float bowl?It was getting dark so i left because i didn't have any new fuel line with me.Does #1 octy mean it goes to #1 carb?1980 XS1100 SG

Be careful with carb dip solutions, many types are not friendly to rubber seals. You can ruin the throttle plate seals and attempting to removing those is tough. You can do a good job with carb spray but do remove all jets, diaphragms, and the tiny o rings at the pilot screws if you have them. Avoid spraying the throttle plate seals where it rotates.Skids (Sid Hansen)

Gotcha-yes we test things like that all the time at work. Some sprays actually will shrink the rubber or completely dissolve it.1980 XS1100 SG

Should be more fuel in there than a teaspoon full. If you need a level to compare it to, open one of the other bowls. Here is the octy routing diagram, carbs 1 and 2 get their fuel from the same hose, #20. The on-reserve positions on the selector should flow thru 21,24, and 20. Hose 23 is the prime position fuel flow bypassing the octy.
