  • Bike's EMF Causing Disruption of Cellphone?

So, I've been riding the bike as much as possible these past couple of weeks. I have an HTC Evo LTE smartphone, and I use it as my mp3 player as well. Anywho, I was listening to it while riding the bike, and I noticed that when I am on the highway at higher rpm's, the player skips the songs very quickly. Like, a song will skip to the next song as if I am hitting forward every few seconds. Do you think with the bike being at higher rpms, there is some type of EMF causing some type of disruption with my phone?

      Hi Phil,
no, phones are too selfish to want to be turned off.
What the phone is telling Ian is to pull off the road and park so he can pay attention to the music without being distracted by traffic.

To give you my 2 cents, My phone has no issues playing my Pandora during my ride.
The only thing that happened to me was the mic mute button sometimes gets tapped and the phone will pause playing.
Is your's mounted? (I keep mine in my pocket) If so, The vibration may be what's causing it to fast forward.

Oh and for all those who say I shouldn't be listening to the radio while riding, My volume isn't up that load and it relaxes me so I don't get all uptight about all these cagers driving & blaring their music and texting while driving with their knees!

I don't think the EMF would mess with the internal music on the cell phone. It might cause things like poor cell reception or dropped calls, but that's because it interferes with the radio signals. In your case, unless you are using a bluetooth headset, there are no radio signals to interfere with.

I'd say the vibration issue is the most likely culprit. Try locking all the buttons (if you can) and see if that stops the problem.

Sounds like what would happen when I listen to music while mowing the lawn. Sometimes the vibration from the tractor would skip the songs. Haven't tried it out on the bike yet though, have the tunes playing from the fairing.

Lol, I should have prepared for that response, and you are all right. However, I keep the music low so that I can hear the beautiful whine of the driveshaft, and the throaty intake at the sharp twist of the throttle, and the growl of the Mac turnout exhaust when letting off the throttle. This cacophony of noise can be well-heard over the music playing in my earbuds. It just gives me something to slap my thigh to on the longer rides.

Now, the phone is all touch-screen, so, there are no pushbuttons. However, I do use earbuds from an old iPod that has the in-line mic in the earbud wire. I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it? Like, the mic is picking up the noise and is interpreting it as a "fast-forward" command. I'll have to look at the settings of the phone to see if there is anything controlling the player with a headset option. Also, I have not tried it with other earbuds, as they just do not fit well inside the helmet.

I'm a safe rider and pay more attention to the road based off this forum and the older veterans with more experience and knowledge than myself. So, no sarcasm at all when I say thank you for your concern with regard to riding with music.
