  • New to XS

Hi I have been learning from this site for a few weeks since I got the two 80 xs elevens home a couple of weeks ago.
They were both my cousin's who passed away a little over a year ago.
One is silver full dress with 31000 miles that is in fairly nice shape.
I have it up on the lift cleaning the carbs and what ever else is needed to get it running and looking good to sell for my aunt.
The other is ruby red full dress with 15000 mile and was torn apart some what.
I am going to go through it and find out what was going on with it so I can keep it in honor of my late cousin.
These are the first yamahas I have ever had anything to do with, but not the first old bikes.
    I have a 78 goldwing that I have had for several years,I had a 79 goldwing in 1983 when I was 16.
I am sure I am going to end up having some questions as I go through these two old bikes.
The 1st ? is the silver one has a lock heart oil cooler on it should I consider putting it on the one I'm keeping? Or living in Mn is it really that big of a deal.
Sorry for being such a long post for a first post and thanks for having what seems to be a great site.
    Thanks
    Dave

Probably not a big deal in minnesota.

Was your cousin on this site? Any idea what his username might have been? Or what town he would have listed as home?

      Welcome.

I'll see what I can do they are in the shop so not real good light for pics.
I am going to be out there this afternoon playing with them.
Its a rainy day here so a good day to turn up the heat and work on the toys.
It is so nice to have a 2 car garage and a 24x30 shop in the back yard.
I do need to get these some what put back together here in the next couple of weeks. So I can put these back in the corner covered up to make room for a kitchen side job I need to get started on.

              Looks like it worked.

That exhaust looks like a MAC 4-2 originally with turnouts that have been replaced with straight mufflers.

BTW in pic 1 the sidecover doesnt go there, thats where the seat goes

I like that HF lift. May have to look for one.

And my Table Saw has more crap on it than yours. I am jealous.

That makes sense. The mufflers look like harleys

Sure does beat working on the ground. A friend of mine bought that new a few years ago and never used it. I put in a new front door for him for the lift so all it cost was a afternoon of work.

I clean that saw of almost every time I go in the shop and by the end of the day it always looks like that.

                      Hi Dave and welcome,
aftermarket 4 into 2 exhaust with a megaphone end muffler on the right side and a tapered end muffler on the left. Do the mufflers bolt off or are they welded on?
WTF, XS11 exhausts are so rare they are becoming "collectable" so if you have any sort of good one, be happy.
Major XS11 "features" not common on other bikes:- the engine turns backwards and you get intermittent ignition failures if the ignition pickup wires fail through the vacuum advance continually flexing them.
At least with your two bikes being Standards you don't have to get your head around the Special's Weird Harold tapered pad swivelling front brake calipers.
And a maintenance tip, you'll see a grease point on the rear drive that's supposed to grease the driveshaft rear spline.
It don't. The grease goes all over the spine's outside but can't get inside where it needs to be.
Pull the pumpkin and grease the spline internals manually. Every rear tire change is enough.

The bike in the last pic appears to have Jardine slip-ons installed (the other bike has MACs). These reused the OEM head pipes and collectors after cutting the stock mufflers off. This exhaust should have a crossover, and is the better of the two...

                        Good looking start!

Hello Dave.........what a lucky Sod! Two of-em.....I hate that you accrued them in the fashion you did but: keeping them in memory of him is a good thing! Let me add the 2nd gear isn't this bikes strongest point. Many a "Hot Rod" ruined these while jamming gears.....I've had to replace mine....two broken teeth on Primary gears as well. Make sure you have a GOOD CLEAN ground points...will make your life allot easier! Good luck....welcome to the club...some very good guys in here! Keep us posted as you go along.
