I am switching frames on a bike I bought. The guy who I bought the "new" frame from, ground off several mounting tabs and brackets. If I don't need the two in the pic for anything, I will leave these two off. I have circled them in the pics. I already have to weld the kickstand mounts, side cover mounts, and a few others. I don't want to reattach stuff I won't need.

Those are for the bolts that hold the top rail of the battery box in place.

I've never seen bolts that hold that top battery rail in place, the rail is just pressed into the rubber grommets/dampers.
Are there really bolts that hold that top rail up? That'd be nice, especially if the rubber is getting weak and doesn't have enough umph to hold the rail up.Hi, my name is George & I'm a twisty addict!

Yep, if you look at those metal stubs that poke into the rubber gromets you will see threads inside there. Basically the same bolts and large washers as on bottom go up top.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Check the 'electrical 1' parts fiche for the exploded view; no bolts....Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Steve, Not to be overly argumentative, but, looking at electrical parts fiche, do you see the bottom plate for the battery, or the bolts that hold it down? I have not found that in the parts fiche yet.
All I know for certain is mine is bolted in place. Makes putting the battery in and out ALOT easier without fussing with that top bar falling out till you get the battery in far enough.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

There were no bolts in the top holddown on my '78 I bought new, and none are shown in the parts fiche for that part other than the one that ties it to the 'band, battery' as Yamaha calls it, for any of the XS models. I've never seen bolts on the upper battery holddown on any of the bikes I've seen.
The parts fiche is a bit confusing; they show the main battery tray and it's hardware for bolting to the frame on the 'sidecover/tools' diagram, but the rest is on the 'electrical 1' diagram.
I bet that a PO added the ones you have...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Nope, if they are additional I added them. The battery box was lucky to still be there when I got the bike. Intended or not, the bolts threaded right into those post as I recall.
Anyway, the brackets are for the post, as originally answered to the primary question. Bolts are apparently not designed in, but had no problem getting them threaded in and I like what they do for putting the battery in and out.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Thank you both. I didn't see any bolts on the fiche either, but I think I'm gonna try to put some in there to help hold the upper bar in place to make battery removal/install easier.
When I got my G years ago, it didn't have an upper support bar. It wasn't until I picked up my SG project that I even knew there was supposed to be one in there, and it was barely hanging in those rubber grommets and fell out shortly after I slid the battery out, so maybe some large washers and some long bolts with some locktite might be the way to go.
Thanks again fellas.Hi, my name is George & I'm a twisty addict!

The thing to remember is those studs sticking out of the top support aren't what's supposed to hold the bracket in place; those are there strictly to provide vibration damping for the complete tray/battery assembly. If you have all the parts, that bracket engages in a slot at the 'closed' end of the battery tray and clamps against the battery with the strap seen on the left side tray here:
The strap hooks onto the tray at the lower right corner as seen, then bolts to the upper support.
The XJ tray on the right is the same in operation, but different in design. The strap bolts to the tray, the center hole in the strap goes over a stud on the frame with a rubber damper.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Maybe I can fabricate one. Right now I have a stainlees strap bolted across, just to keep the side from spreading. Thanks for the blue print. CZ

Jerry, if you still have the rubber grommet on the frame let me know and I'll post the dimensions of the stock bracket...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two
