Brakes are probably fine Rob....time to spend your dough on this:

No, I know that feeling and you nailed it. Clean up those brakes and it rolls easier unless going uphill.

I am just hoping John wants the one on the left and not the one on the right.

As to the carb screws and all other parts on and in the carbs, PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench is your best friend. I highly recommend a good spray or three with it before trying to pull the fasteners or any of the jets. Also, an impact driver can help alot on those screws.

Should you find you strip out one or more of those japenese phillips head screws, many have used a dremel to create a straight slot for a bigger flat screw driver. Then replaced all of those with hex head bolts.
Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Well I took my carbs almost all apart tonight. Finally got all the top screws out. And I must say how surprised I am by how good everything looks so far. There is minimal gunk in the bottom of the float bowls and everything is pretty shiny. But I'm assuming theres gunk everywhere I cannot see. I didn't attempt any cleaning tonight, just taking a look. Was considering using pine sol to dip the carbs, after reading some posts here. But well see. The good news is that the diaphragms are in near perfect condition.

          Pictures tomorrow.

Ok, -very little- progress to report. Got the carbs torn apart soaked for 3 days I'm Pinesol and finally went through the process of putting them back together today, blowing 'em out with compressed air, spot cleaning with spray carb cleaner. Finally got 'em back together and into the boots. Ran my fuel lines with the clear 'motorcycle' inline filters, by passing the octy and pulled out the choke. Key, it, start button pressed - she fired right up. Ran it like that for about 3 minutes, then pushed the choke in...

            Perfect idle.

So, I gave it throttle and it took it, but not smoothly, it kept popping. Acted like that for a few minutes, then it evened out took smooth throttle and seemed to run fine. So, I whipped out my cell phone to shoot some video. Got around to the left side of the bike and... She just died. True to start it back up, and she just turned over, not firing. I checked the filters for gas, and sure enough gas was in there. So I pulled the choke back out and she started again, however when I pushed it back in, the bike just shut off. Exactly what it was doing before I cleaned the carbs, except it never idled with the choke off before.

Guess the carbs need to come back off? I need to replace the plugs in there, I don't know if that could possibly be it. I have never pulled and inspected them. Anyway, I'm feeling defeated and tired right now! But that's mainly because I have a nasty cold. Oh well.

Update: went back out after changing battery. Got bike started again. Still popping through filter cones, and if I just let it idle if it sits at 1k rpm too long it'll just drop off and die, but starts back up. Keeps running if I feather the throttle. Always pops through the filter cones around 2k RPM. So, whadda think, carbs gotta come off again?

As for those that said I was weak, ha ha, I took the rear caliper off and whoa - believe it or not, I can now easily roll the bike!!! now, if only I can convince that dang piston to come out of it...

              Yay for one win today.

Have you synced and set idle mix yet? Gotta do that!

With the cone filters and popping out of them, then you're probably too lean. Try turning out your idle mix screws one turn and see if that helps a little.

+1 on what nate said about syncing.
You can eyeball (or use the bread tie method) the butterfly shafts to get them even, but once you get it to stay somewhere near 1100rpm without the choke, then dial those carbs in with a sync.
Then once it's synced, then you can dial in the rich/lean condition with the idle mix screws.

Once up and running, replace those ancient tires. Dunlop hasn't made those particular model tires for some 15yrs.!

Thanks for the tips. I actually haven't really messed with it for about a week, well, not the motor that is. I have the back brake torn apart right now. It was frozen, but the grease gun method got it free. I want to paint the caliper and then move onto the front. I plan on having it ready to ride by the end of the month, right after my MSF course.

I looked for a date code on the tires, but I didn't spot it. For sure need to get em changed!

Here's a video of the bike running and popping back a bit. This was a somewhat cold start. http://youtu.be/4aiZoyRNmI8

Got a small amount of progress done this weekend. Finished cleaning the rear caliper, put it back together and painted it.

I also took the rear master cylinder apart and cleaned it pretty good. Since I have to wait for the paint on the rear caliper to dry, I went ahead and opened up the front master cylinder. I knew that it was dry, but I wasn't expecting what I found! It wasn't a pleasing sight. See the picture. So I put it back together, pulled the ribs I have had smoking on the grill all day off and walked away. For now. I reckon the front brakes are gonna be fun.
