  • Emergency Tribig needs help

Just got a call from Todd. He is broke down near Wildersville, Tennessee and needs a complete U-joint as the splines went bad on his.
If anyone is near or can help him out call him. 580-421-5782

    Hey Cruiser,

I hope that he also had the Ph#'s of the others that he rode out there with to try to contact, Harry, JohnH, Greg...they were going to get a late start due to having to wait to put a tire on Greg's bike. I hope heTrbig/Tod get's someone to help him and he eventually gets home safely....that way I won't feel too guilty about teasing him about yet another possible reason for NOT doing the 750/850 FD mod....too little spline depth contact for the amount of stress put on it with the higher ratio FD, not to mention the level of stress that TOD normally puts on his bikes/engines!!

I copied this to the Southeast Forum in hopes that the OK group will see it there.

It was JW's bike that needed the tire TC, not mine and the problem Tod has isn't do to the FD mod, Tod messed it up putting it back together. He got it cocked in there And wiped out the splines when he tested it on the center stand.

I guess the vibration was caused by water getting into the middle drive. The vent tube isn't up under the seat where it belongs it just hangs uner the bike.

We're all here in a hotel in somewhere Tennessee about 100 miles east of Memphis.

Well, I didn't get as far as I wanted to today. I felt a weird vibration @ 75-80mph. I thought about just going a bit slower than that, but decided I'd better make sure it wasn't a bearing or something. I pulled in to a truck stop and they were nice enough to let me pull it under the awning. I pulled the rear tire and the rear bearings were good. I decided to check the U-joint, then remembered that to really do that, I'd need to pull the middle drive. I decided to check the middle drive fluid. I had just changed it before leaving, but noticed it didn't look like oil any more with so much water in it. It was running fine when I stopped for lunch, but as it cooled, apparently drew in water... or had been doing that all weekend and finally had enough. This is the "Oil" I drained.

After trying to put it back together, the driveline was being a PITA to install, so I thought I got it and mounted the final drive. Just to make sure, I started it and let out the clutch and I apparently didn't get the driveline in all the way and it wobbled inside the shaft housing and the hardened driveline gear ate up the first 1/8 inch of splines on the u-joint yolk.
So... pulled the middle drive to get access to the u-joint and had to sit there for a couple hours with the little file in my Gerber tool grinding out new slots. Finally got the driveline to slip into the yolk, and took a couple pics before reassembly.

Just when I finished and started putting my tools away, the other three showed up. They'll do anything to get out of work. Grabbed a hotel and will try to make another run for home in the morning. Arlan, thanks a bunch for posting for me. I used to carry a spare u-joint all the time and quit for some reason.

Only on this list does a guy do fairly major bike surgery on the road and take pictures while he's doing it...

Yeah, and the crazy thing is, after all that all it needed was the oil changed in the middle drive.

The rest of us got to Wildersville about 8:30 and trbig had disassembled and reassembled the middle drive, final drive, and driveshaft to change the MD oil.

                  What a drama queen.

                  Glad it was something simple.

Tod usually leads because he has the GPS. Some of the things he's done and the places gone with his bike you really don't want to follow.

What happened to you Wade, I figured you would be there.
