  • Possible option for factory coil replacement?

Was looking around JP Cycles last night and found these coils:

    http://www.jpcycles.com/product/382-000

They look like they could be a good swap for the factory coils. They mount with the same orientation.

Granted I am a new owner, so I may not know all the variables, but thought I would throw this out for more experienced owners to evaluate as an option.

I checked these out a while ago and contacted Dyna about these. Unfortunately, these won't work with the XS ignition as it lacks 'dwell control' (electronically controlling the 'on' time) and they'll burn up. Swap to a modern aftermarket control box and you can use them, but now you're talking big $$$...

I see, thanks for the info.

So I guess I just have to decide between the Dyna green coils and the Accel coils.

Either way, I have to decide whether to go with the 1.5 ohm coils and keep the ballast resistor or go with the 3 ohm coils and remove the ballast resistor.

After reading multiple posts on the aftermarket coils, I still can't find a definitive answer whether pulling the ballast resistor and going the 3 ohm coil route will harm the TCI box or not. Guess I will just have to keep digging.

Love having so much knowledge in one place. Now I just need to work on making a contribution in return.

The TCI doesn't care it it sees 3 ohms from the coils or 1.5 from the coils plus 1.5 from the balast resistor. Personally I would ditch the resistor and go with 3.0 ohm coils. The resistor is just another unnecessary passive component that can fail and cause headaches...

Ditch the resistor and go with the 3 ohm units. Those will have a hotter spark without the resistor compared to the 1.5 ohm units with one under normal running conditions...

It really only makes sence to go with 3 ohm coils. The ballast resistor fail over time so you may as well get rid of it now.

Get the DC-1 3 ohm could if you go with dynatek

I just switched to the Dyna a few weeks ago, 3 Ohms . I had the green "MikesXS" coils on before they crapped out. The difference is amazing. Excellent throttle response and about 4 more mile to the gallon to boot!!!

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I plan on ordering the Dyna coils once I get paid on Friday.

Good move. I use green Dyna coils. I ditched the ballast resistor and never had any problems. The coils improved performance noticeably.

Here's how they fit. You need to use a couple of small L brackets per coil, I think you'll find.

                    Ditto Dyna

Yep, ditto here for the 3 ohm Dyna coils. Used their (plug) wires too. Left the OEM ballast resistor in place, but it is disconnected and unused.

As has been explained, the TCI (ignition) module is looking for 3 ohms resistance. It does not care how it gets it. From the factory it gets....1.5 coils + 1.5 ballast resistor = 3 ohms. The Dynas are 3 ohms by themselves, no need to add another 1.5 with the (ballast) resistor. So, toss it or leave it unhooked and put the 2 wires going to it (from TCI) together to complete that circuit.

A little fabrication is needed to mount them, but no big deal - you have to make some angle brackets to clock the coils 90 degrees (down).

But they do work well. I like them enough to buy another set for bike # 2 eventually.

Just Google dynatek DC-1 coils and take your pic of vendors.

                          More on coils

When I fired up Yami my 78 XS11 Special this morning, it ran on the two left cylinders but not the two right hand cylinders.
I assumed that one of the coils has failed, assuming that one coil provides zap for two cylinders.
If the above is correct I hear you saying that the Dyna coils work well.
Can you tell me where to buy them?
                          Thank you. Unkle Crusty

Aww, Unk, you're just caught up in the current coil craze. The left coil sparks 1 and 4, the right coil sparks 2 and 3, so if the two right cylinders are dead, that means that the fuel delivery to them is suspect. Go check the petcocks, or your fuel level, and if it is low, check your crankcase oil level. CZ

                              Dopey me.

Too many bikes. The others turn on the fuel magically.
Yami, which is actually a 79, requires the left and right side fuel taps
( petcocks ) to be turned on. I had failed to turn on the right hand one.
To be sure I will fire him again tomorrow morning.
I am in the middle of working on the front brakes.
                              Thank you for the information.
