  • 1980g Standard: How much is it worth?

Check out what my bike looks like.

It has bad rings and valves at 40k+ miles. If it even sold in that condition, what would it be worth? $300?

Is there an owners bike section on the site?

I'd buy it at that price but I have 2 low mileage spare engines.

Got a local newbie wanting it for $800. Should I sell?

That is a dang nice bike! Looks really nice. Did you tell him what it needs? If anything, just tell him the "symptoms" so he can piece it together if he so desires.

If it runs and drives, I'd say it would be worth $800...I got mine for $500, and although I can't tell that it needs any major engine work, who knows, it could! I haven't been able to test it to find out.

I guess if he'll pay you that, then I don't see why not to take it!

        Just my opinion.

Hey, that'd be a perfect race-sleeper...big-bore kit and ported head (fix the valve stuff at the same time)...I guess that would cover those items that are wrong with it!

That's what I had planned to do, but don't have enough room for the bikes, money for the bore kit, and time to do the repair. Thus I should probably just ride my 79sf (sound engine). When its engine develops enough wear, perhaps by that time I'd have some money, space, and time set aside.

I originally got my 80g for $650. I did the following:
          new seat - $100+
          new rear tire - $100+
          replacement carb diaphragms - $100+
House of Kolour Paint - $200+
          Fork Seals - $20
          other stuff - $who knows

I think I have about $1200 into it. If I could get $8 or $900 from a local kid with its engine wear, I think that would be good enough to let it go.

I have reservations selling it to someone with NO riding experience. The XS, in my opinion, is NOT a beginner bike and it sounds like he just wants something fast. == disaster.

              Chain?

              Hi Ben,
price, cost, worth and value have seperate meanings.
A thing's monetory worth is what you can get for it, no more, no less. If you'd rather have $800 than that bike, go for it.
That's a nice lookin' bike too but what is that anchor chain that seems to be growing out of the handlebars?

Ben, is that a Special Standard? It looks to have a little of both going on there. Looks good though.

A standard. That is the best this bike has ever looked. The other day I went over a bump and the side panel bounced off scratching up my $200 dollar paint job.

I also have a '79sf that I am working on here. I think they look totally different. However, I may hack up the '79sf. I don't like how crappy the seat fits to that tiny little gas tank - terrible lines... I just won some side panels for it. I'd actually like to put an '80 fender, grab bar, and seat on this 79. I think this model has an ugly butt-end.

Your seat appears to be in horrible condition. It looks like the pan is damaged. The '79 looks great to me with a good stock seat on it. They had a pretty chrome grab rail around it too. Maybe somebody here can hook you up or there's eBay.

Go to MIKE'S XS site. He has some very cool tail lights to replace that square block.

That's disappointing. It looks like an elephant sat on it. I've been trying to get the grab bar. I still like the later years for butt-ends.
