  • speedo question

i swapped the 85mph speedo from my '80 xs1100 special for a 120mph unit from an xs650special. went right on with only a little wiring change. the unit works (only has 9,000 miles on it) but it is very slow to respond. goes up and down slowly but will reach the correct speeds according to my gps. is there a difference in the drive units i don't know about? the stock 85mph unit works just fine.

Your new speedo probably needs some kind of lubrication, you could try squirting some silicone spray up where the cable goes in. If that doesn't work, you may have to take it apart to lube it properly. AFAIK, the drive unit ratios between the 650 and 1100 are the same.

      Phil,

You are correct. The fault is in the speedo. Other than possible wiring differences for the lights, the XS650 clock is a direct swap.

It wouldn't hurt to check the cable for friction and lube it. I'd replace the cable before I took the clock apart.
