  • New Barnetts....Wow!

Clutch was letting go at hard throttle at about 6200 RPM and not giving me the throttle response I needed at lower RPM's. Got a set of Barnetts for $20.00 and put them on last night. After riding my XJ for 4 months, I finally am able to see what my bike can do. She screams! I'm going to have to develop a resisance to twisting the wrist hard for that adrenaline rush.

    Now I need a 160 MPH speedo.

Barnetts have been on my to-do list for quite some time. Have not had any problem with the stock springs yet so it hasn't been a priority.

              me too

i want to put new springs on my bike, because i have had a few clutch problems lately. I think i have fixed the problem with a clutch adjustment, but it still seems like its not 100%. and i was wondering about how long would it take for someone that is doing it for the first time.

A couple of hours. Half of the job is getting things out of the way. I had to take my right peg off because I did not have the right type of hex wrench to get at the bottom-left bolt with the peg in place. That alone made the job an hour longer because I had trouble getting the long motormount bolt and the rear peg mount back on. I also have the factory manual, which sometimes is pretty useless. The most important thing is to take it easy on the "star" that covers the springs. If not loosened or tightened evenly and gradually, it will break. I broke one not being careful. BTW, the "star" bolts are to be torqued to 7.2 ft/lbs.

The peg has to come off anyway to pull the cover out far enough to clear the clutch pack and even more so if you have the kickstart shaft sticking through there.

If you have a jack to raise the rear of the engine just a little to take the weight of that mount bolt it will slip out and in by hand.

Ive never had to remove my foot peg to get my cover off. If you loosed the big bolt that holds it on you can then rotate the peg to gain access to the last one or two bolts of the cover then slide the cover off... I've never removed the engine bolt...

Rotate it how? it has stops going both ways.

If you can get yours apartwithout taking it off more power to ya. With mine, even with the front peg off the rear peg mount is kinda still in the way.

That must be a 78-79 vs 80-81 thing on rotating the foot peg. Even the tech tip on the dremel repair says to loosen that engine mount bolt to let the foot pegs rotate out of the way.

I know for a fact I have never removed that bolt except when pulling the engine from the wrecked bike, and I have been in more than a few clutch covers. I have replaced the springs in a clutch without draining the oil. If you put the bike on the sidestand, oil level is below the clutch cover on that side.

Y'all said I didn't need to remove the shift drum to get the shift forks out too but I've done 2 since then, one out of the bike, and I had to slide the drum out of the way on both.

I'm a firm believer in the fact that the job is easier if stuff is out of the way rather than trying to do the repair AND fight crap that's in the way. It's easier to remove and reinstall the extremities than to have to work around them.
