I bought a '81 Xs1100SF a few months ago for parts. The poor thing had had a few ass hat PO's. It's amazing how well you can document PO stupidity when completely disassembling a bike. It looked like a carbide toothed badger knawed at the #2&#3 spark plug holes. Had a 140 width tire on the rear that had rubbed the drive shaft housing for a coons age.

But.. The carbs were good and thats all I wanted, oh and my dad got a master cylinder out of the deal.

Now to the reason for this post. The bike had a Super Trapp 4-1 exhuast on it. I have never heard of it. It is actually in decent shape except for a sizable crease where it was put down in the past.

Anyone know about this exhuast? It has a large baffle in the tip.

No you did not, no way, no how. SF is a 79 Special, not an 81 model.

Since exhaust systems for these bikes are becoming more and more difficult to obtain. I would suggest any system you have that is servicable is worth maintaining.

It looks like no new XS1100 exhaust is being manufactured unless your pockets are deep for this bike. MAC is no longer making them. I remain unsure about the Marshall Deeptone. (I found a site where it could be loaded into the shopping cart.)

Yes, I concur. Do not discard a serviceable exhaust.

Supertrapp exhausts are great, I'd say a little better than a kerker. I had one and loved it. Are you sure the big dent you are looking at isn't for the center stand.

Note: Supertrapp bought Kerker in 1991

In my opinion, the Supertrapp is the best exhaust I have had on an XS. And I have had stock Special,Standard, as well as Kerker, Jardine and Mac.

I love the Supertrapp on my 79. It is a little loud, or so iv'e been told. Really doesn't seem too loud when riding it and that's all that matters.

I have always read on this site that stock is the best for these bikes.
I'm curious, what factors do you use to decide which exhaust system is "The best"? engine performance, sound, ruggedness, etc.....

The Supertrapp that I had you could add or subtract plates.Doing so would change sound as well as back pressure. It sounded awesome and the bike ran well with it.
I also had an another one that had the stock exhaust on it and the bike had about 4000 miles on it when I got it.It had been stored for over 20 years. That bike sounded great too,but was obviously quieter than the Supertrapp.
But I think the one with the stock exhaust felt like it ran stronger than the other one. I am a believer that the stock exhaust on an XS11 is the best for overall performance, but I like the sound of a 4 into 1 better.

The stock exhaust has (or should have) the proper pipe diameter. It is part of the tuning.

Let me just tell you about stock: Pulls hards from idle to redline. OK, maybe a little harder from 5000rpms to redline. No "dead spots" throughout the range, no backfiring or popping on deceleration. More even torque curve.

After-market: You may have issues trying to stop stop the popping on deceleration. It is usually something that you compromise with for avoiding dead-spots in the acceleration range. Also, some 4-1 systems seem to never reach the redline in 5th gear. It seems that the mains just can't be big enough, but it may be related to harmonic resonance. Exhaust scavenging may help with increased torque at certain rpm ranges, but may compromise torque at others ("peaky" torque rather than an even torque curve).

Next to stock, I think 4-1 supertrapp is the best, due to the adjustability by adding or removing baffle plates, it allows significantly more tuning than any other aftermarket muffler. My sister had a seca 750, with a UNI filter in the oem box, and a supertrapp, just one size up on the main, and slightly tweaked mixture screws, and that thing ran like a raped ape, no dead spots, and no popping, was one of the best muscle bikes I have ever ridden, I also had a supertrapp on my xr500, and loved it, just the right mix of sound and power, and with the right number of baffle plates, no popping or running issues. Plus the plates, and end caps are still readily available from supertrapp, and can be bought individually. They make one h3ll of a great product IMO... I've been toying with the idea of modifying my 11s kerker to accept supertrapp baffles and cap, but my only deterrent is that they no longer make solid billet milled end caps, now they are all stamped steel. :-( but I'm tempted to build my own cap on the lathe for it, and just buying the baffles... Decisions, decisions...
